Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Heart

Six months later.

The Hudson Valley was blanketed in the golden brilliance of early autumn. The rolling hills were painted in fiery shades of amber, rust, and crimson, and the crisp mountain air smelled of cedarwood, fallen leaves, and clean rain.

Nestled in the heart of the valley stood the Ashworth-Lennox Animal Rehabilitation Sanctuary.

The sprawling two-hundred-acre estate featured restored timber barns, open grassy paddocks, and state-of-the-art veterinary surgical suites. Over forty rescue dogs—stray pit bulls, abused mastiffs, and injured working breeds—ran freely through fenced meadows, their joyful barks echoing through the valley.

Briar stood on the wide wraparound porch of the main farmhouse, wearing comfortable riding boots, faded jeans, and a warm fleece vest. Her dark curls were tied back in a messy braid, her cheeks flushed with the rosy glow of health, happiness, and peace.

Down in the lower meadow, Baron—now a colossal, magnificent beast of one hundred and sixty pounds with a thick, lustrous silver coat—was chasing a rubber ball with the boundless energy of a puppy. Beside him, running across the grass with long, effortless strides, was Damien.

The ruthless mafia boss who had once held New York in an iron grip had traded his bespoke three-piece suits for dark denim, heavy leather boots, and a worn flannel shirt. He still ran the syndicate’s logistics empire, but the iron throne was now managed with a new, quiet purpose: protecting the sanctuary, funding animal rescues across the country, and building a legacy his mother would have wept with pride to see.

Damien threw the ball with a powerful heave, sending it soaring across the paddock. Baron caught it mid-air, trotting back proudly and dropping it at Damien’s feet, nudging the man’s hand with his massive head.

Damien scratched the dog behind his ears, smiling—a genuine, warm smile that transformed his chiseled face into something breathtaking.

He looked up toward the porch, caught Briar’s gaze, and began walking up the hill, Baron trotting faithfully at his side.

"You're late for lunch," Briar called out teasingly as he climbed the wooden steps, crossing her arms over her chest. "The head surgeon from Cornell is arriving at two to review the new equine wing, and you smell like wet grass."

Damien didn't say a word. He stepped onto the porch, closed the distance between them, and wrapped his powerful arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest.

"Let Cornell wait," Damien murmured, his gray eyes shining with an intense, devoted warmth.

He leaned down and kissed her—a deep, tender, proprietary kiss that took her breath away. Briar melted into his embrace, her hands resting against his broad chest, feeling the steady, powerful beat of his sovereign heart beneath his shirt.

Baron climbed the steps, let out a massive, contented yawn, and collapsed across both of their feet, effectively pinning them together on the porch.

Briar laughed against Damien’s lips, looking down at the giant silver dog who had started it all. "He’s still keeping us trapped, you know."

Damien tightened his hold on her, resting his forehead against hers as the autumn breeze swirled golden leaves across the porch.

"Some cages, little bird," Damien whispered, his voice filled with an unshakeable, eternal peace, "are just another name for home."
