Chapter 6 - The Scapegoat’s Reckoning

The fluorescent lights of the downtown Los Angeles police precinct interrogation room hummed with a low, monotonous drone that seemed to vibrate directly inside Rodrigo Sanders’s skull. His expensive Brioni suit, which had looked so sharp under the crystal chandeliers of his Beverly Hills mansion less than forty-eight hours ago, now hung limply off his shoulders, wrinkled and stained with the nervous sweat of a man who was rapidly realizing his life had evaporated.

Across the scratched metal table sat Detective Marcus Vance, a veteran white-collar crime investigator whose eyes had seen every flavor of corporate greed and self-delusion Southern California had to offer. Vance didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t need to. He simply slid a thick manila folder across the table, the federal seal stamped in bold red ink glaring up at Rodrigo like an unblinking eye.

“Let’s go through this one more time, Mr. Sanders,” Vance said, leaning back in his chair and lacing his fingers together over his belt. “According to the forensic audit provided by Halston Residential Holdings, your construction firm, Sanders & Associates, has systematically diverted over four point two million dollars in operational capital into personal discretionary accounts over the past thirty-six months. Funds that were legally earmarked for municipal subcontractors, safety compliance, and employee pension trusts.”

Rodrigo swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. His hands, cuffed loosely to the bolt in the center of the table, trembled visibly. “That’s... that’s a misunderstanding. Those were corporate loans. Standard inter-company transfers. My accountants handled the structuring. I signed where they told me to sign.”

“Your accountants,” Detective Vance repeated smoothly, flipping open the folder to reveal a series of signed authorization forms bearing Rodrigo’s distinct signature. “You mean the internal bookkeepers you fired six months ago, or the outside firm that formally resigned last week after discovering your signature on falsified asset valuations? Because according to our investigation, every single unauthorized wire transfer originated from your personal IP address, authenticated by your biometric security key.”

Vance leaned forward, resting his forearms on the cold steel table. “Here is the reality of your situation, Rodrigo. You are facing six counts of wire fraud, three counts of grand larceny, and federal charges for interstate financial manipulation. The sentencing guidelines for your specific bracket carry a mandatory minimum of twelve years in federal custody. No bail. No probation.”

A cold bead of sweat trickled down Rodrigo’s temple, stinging his eye. He thought of his mother, Evelyn, currently holed up in a cramped, two-star motel off Pico Boulevard, panicking because her credit cards were permanently blocked and her friends had stopped returning her calls. He thought of his sister Chloe, who was currently packing her designer bags to move back in with her estranged ex-husband because the gravy train had violently derailed.

“I want to talk to my attorney,” Rodrigo whispered, though the words sounded hollow even to his own ears.

“Your attorney formally filed a motion to withdraw from your representation fifteen minutes ago,” Vance replied, closing the folder with a sharp snap that echoed like a gavel. “Turns out your retainer bounced. You’re entirely on your own, Mr. Sanders. Unless, of course, you’d like to cooperate and explain why you spent corporate payroll funds on private luxury jets, country club memberships, and jewelry for your mother instead of paying your subcontractors.”

Rodrigo stared down at his cuffed hands, the absolute horror of his reality finally crushing down upon him. He had spent his entire adult life believing he was a titan of industry, a self-made master of the universe. In reality, he had been a hollow puppet dancing on strings pulled by a woman he had systematically underestimated, abused, and betrayed.
