Chapter 23 - The Five-Minute War

"Marcus, do something!" I screamed as the crimson numbers on the massive wall monitors began their relentless countdown: *04:59... 04:58...*
Marcus didn't hesitate. Instead of trying to reason with a dying psychopath, his tactical training kicked in with terrifying precision. In one fluid motion, he holstered his weapon, lunged across the control console, and grabbed Arthur Sr. by the lapels of his suit jacket, lifting the frail old man completely out of the leather chair.
"The override code! Give it to me!" Marcus barked, slamming Arthur’s back against the steel server rack.
"You... you can't stop it," Arthur gasped, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth, his breathing ragged and shallow. "The transmission is decentralized... routed through six different satellites... AAAHH!"
Marcus didn't waste another second listening to the old man's rambling. With his free hand, he ripped the heavy gold signet ring straight off Arthur’s pinky finger—the master cryptographic key used to authenticate all legacy Vance transactions.
"Clara! Catch!" Marcus tossed the heavy ring through the air. I caught it clumsily against my chest, staring at it in sheer panic. "The biometric terminal beneath the main console! Use my thumbprint and your family bloodline DNA—press it into the optical scanner!"
"I don't know how!"
"You do! It's encrypted to the primary heir! Your father taught you the lineage sequence when you were ten years old—the birthdates of the founding partners, backwards!"
The countdown flashed: *03:15... 03:14...*
I threw myself onto the floor in front of the auxiliary terminal. The screen blinked furiously, demanding a twelve-digit cryptographic passphrase and a biometric verification. My hands were shaking so violently I could barely press the touch-sensitive keys.
*Birthdates... backwards...*
My grandfather’s birth year: 1942. My great uncle’s: 1939. My own father’s: 1968.
*1-9-6-8-1-9-3-9-1-9-4-2.*
I slammed the sequence into the keypad just as the red warning lights began to strobe violently, casting an erratic, strobe-like glare across the subterranean bunker. The screen blinked yellow. *BIOMETRIC VERIFICATION REQUIRED.*
I pressed my thumb hard against the glass scanner, pressing so hard the bone ached, while Marcus held Arthur Sr. pinned against the server rack, the old man wheezing and laughing hysterically as the countdown hit *01:45... 01:44...*
"Come on, come on..." I sobbed, tears blurring my vision as the system processed the lineage data.
*ACCESS DENIED.*
My heart stopped.
"Marcus, it locked me out!" I yelled over the deafening whine of the cooling fans.
"Use the ring!" Marcus roared, his face drenched in sweat as he struggled to keep Arthur from biting his forearm. "The signet ring is the hardware master key! Slot it into the side port!"
I spotted a tiny, square slot hidden beneath the keyboard tray—precisely the size of the heavy gold crest. Without thinking, I jammed the signet ring into the slot until it clicked with a satisfying mechanical crunch.
The screen flickered violently once, twice... and then turned a clean, soothing emerald green.
*SYSTEM OVERRIDE SUCCESSFUL. TRANSMISSION ABORTED. SECURE WIPE IN PROGRESS.*
The red warning lights died instantly, replaced by the soft, humming glow of normal operations. The countdown froze at *00:03*. Three seconds away from total, irreversible exposure—and total, catastrophic ruin.
Arthur Sr. slumped forward in Marcus’s grip, his eyes rolling back into his head, his breathing turning into a wet, rattling wheeze. The adrenaline that had kept him upright for the past twenty minutes completely vanished, leaving behind only an old, broken man at the end of a very long, very dark road.
Marcus lowered him gently onto the concrete floor, checking his pulse before looking up at me across the server room.
"Is it done?" I whispered, my legs finally giving out beneath me as I slid down the side of the console onto the cold floor.
Marcus walked over, extending a strong, steady hand to pull me up into his arms. He buried his face in my hair, holding me so tightly I could feel the frantic, slowing rhythm of his heart against mine.

"It's done," Marcus murmured softly into the quiet room. "The empire is dead. For real this time."
