Chapter 29 - The Gathering Storm

By Sunday morning, the warm, joyful atmosphere of our victory at the county fair had been thoroughly suffocated by the shadow of Victor’s visit. Clara sat at the kitchen table, pouring over the financial ledgers we had painstakingly kept since starting the farm, her face pale under the morning light.

"Julian, he's bluffing," Clara whispered, though her voice lacked conviction. "He has to be. We cleared all our debts through the bankruptcy court. Everything was legally settled."

"Victor doesn't play by normal rules," I said, pacing the length of the rustic kitchen as I stared out the window at our prize-winning apple orchard, bathed in the pale autumn sunlight. "If he bought an old liability from the liquidation, he could have found a loophole in the international holdings. He didn't come all the way out here just to threaten us verbally. He wants to tear this farm down to the studs out of pure spite."

Grace walked sleepily into the kitchen, rubbing her eyes and tugging on the hem of my jeans. "Daddy, why does Mommy look so sad? Is the bad man from last night coming back?"

I knelt down, scooping her up into my arms and burying my face in her soft hair to hide the sudden surge of raw fury boiling in my chest. "No, sweetheart. Mommy and Daddy are just figuring out some grown-up work. Everything is going to be okay." But as I looked up and met Clara's worried gaze, I knew we were standing on the absolute edge of a precipice.
