Chapter 4 - The Battering Ram

At 2:00 PM that afternoon, I was in the kitchen of my three-bedroom townhouse preparing chicken soup for Emily when the quiet of our neighborhood was shattered by the screech of tires.

I looked through the blinds.

A sleek, black Mercedes SUV had parked diagonally across my driveway, blocking my garage. The driver’s door flew open, followed by the passenger door. Margaret and Vanessa emerged, both of them looking disheveled, their faces flushed with frantic rage.

I immediately locked the deadbolt, pulled down the shades, and tapped the recording icon on my security system app. The exterior high-definition Ring camera above my front door began streaming live video directly to my phone, while simultaneously uploading the footage to Daniel Reed’s cloud server.

*BAM! BAM! BAM!*

The heavy wood of my front door shook on its hinges.

“Claire!” Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking. “Open this door right now! Open this goddamn door!”

“Claire, this is your mother!” Margaret’s muffled voice joined in, sharp and frantic. “Stop this childish nonsense and let us in! We know you’re in there! Your car is in the driveway!”

In the living room, Emily sat up on the sofa, clutching her teddy bear against her chest. Her eyes were wide with rising panic.

“Mommy?” she whispered, trembling.

“Stay right there, baby,” I said quietly. “Don’t move. Mommy has this completely under control.”

I walked to the entryway, stopping two feet from the door. I didn’t open it. I spoke clearly toward the wood, knowing the camera would capture every syllable.

“You are trespassing on private property,” I stated loudly. “Leave immediately, or I will call the police.”

“You little ungrateful whore!” Vanessa shrieked through the keyhole. “Do you know what you’ve done? My husband’s firm just received a formal notice that the lease on our home is being terminated! The bank declined our payroll transfer! If my company fails, I will sue you for every penny you have!”

“You won’t sue anyone, Vanessa,” I replied smoothly. “Because you don’t have any pennies. Everything you own—the roof over your head, the car you drove here in, the money you spend on four-hundred-dollar facials—belongs to the Arthur Vance Living Trust. And you just forfeited your right to all of it.”

“Claire!” Margaret banged her fists against the door again. “I am your mother! I raised you! How dare you treat me like a criminal over a tiny disciplinary tap? That child was out of line! She is undisciplined, just like you were! You owe me an apology!”

“A tap?” I said, my voice hardening. “Margaret, the pediatrician documented internal bruising on Emily’s eardrum. The police have opened a criminal investigation for felony battery of a minor. There is a warrant being prepared for your arrest as we speak.”

Total silence fell on the other side of the door.

For five full seconds, neither Margaret nor Vanessa made a sound. Then, I heard Margaret’s breath catch in a sharp gasp.

“A... an arrest warrant?” Margaret stammered, her voice suddenly trembling. “Richard... Richard said you couldn't do that. He said it was a family matter!”

“Richard is wrong,” I said. “And right now, you are violating the harassment statutes of this county. You have sixty seconds to get into your car and leave, or the squad car Officer Kowalski dispatched will arrive while you’re still standing on my porch.”

“Claire, please!” Vanessa’s tone pivoted with sickening desperation from vicious fury to frantic pleading. “Claire, listen to me. We’re sisters! We can talk about this! Just unfreeze the account for forty-eight hours so Greg can make payroll, and I promise I’ll make Mom apologize to Emily! We’ll buy Emily whatever she wants! A horse, a new bedroom set—anything!”

“Emily doesn't want your money, Vanessa,” I said coldly. “She wanted a family that didn't treat her like garbage. But you couldn't give her that. Now, leave.”

I pulled out my phone and dialed the direct dispatch line Officer Kowalski had given me that morning.

“This is Claire Vance,” I said into the receiver. “The suspects named in Incident Report #4409 are currently attempting to force entry into my home.”

Outside, Vanessa must have heard me talking to dispatch. She let out a strangled curse, grabbed Margaret by the arm, and dragged her down the front steps.

Through the window, I watched them scramble back into the Mercedes, the tires smoking as Vanessa threw the car into reverse and sped down the suburban street.

I looked at the saved video file on my phone. Two minutes and forty seconds of crystal-clear footage showing Margaret Vance demanding entry, admitting to striking my daughter, and Vanessa making explicit threats.

I forwarded the file to Daniel Reed with a two-word caption:
