Chapter 14 - The Final Confession

The rain was falling in cold, steady sheets as I walked down the stone pathway toward the main estate gate, escorted by two of our private security personnel holding large black umbrellas. The wind whipped off Lake Washington, carrying a sharp, freezing chill that bit through my jacket, but I didn't feel it. My mind was entirely focused on the woman standing on the other side of the wrought-iron bars. When Celeste saw me approaching through the dark, her frantic pounding stopped. She grabbed the vertical iron bars with both hands, pressing her face against the cold metal, her breath coming in ragged, desperate gasps.
“Claire! Please! You have to listen to me!” Celeste screamed over the sound of the pouring rain, her voice cracking with raw hysteria. “Please open the gate! Just for five minutes!” I stopped a few feet away from the gate, motioning for the security guards to step back. I stood there under the umbrella, looking at her with an expression of cold, unyielding indifference. The triumph she had worn like a crown in my hospital room four months ago was entirely gone, replaced by the hollow, desperate panic of a drowning animal. “You look terrible, Celeste,” I said, my voice carrying clearly across the threshold. “What happened to the twelve-week baby boy and the penthouse life Grant promised you?” Celeste let out a choked, desperate sob, her knees buckling slightly against the wet concrete. “It was all a lie! Grant... Grant never wanted a family. He used me just like he used you! The moment his company started collapsing, he threw me out of his sublet with nothing! He didn't care about the baby—he didn't care about anything except saving himself!”
“And yet, you were more than happy to help him orchestrate paternity fraud, mock my newborn daughter, and try to steal my family’s company,” I reminded her, every word dripping with absolute ice. “You made your bed, Celeste. Now you get to lie in it.” “I didn't act alone!” Celeste cried out, clutching the iron bars so tightly her knuckles turned ghostly white. “Julian Sterling! The old lawyer! He approached me months before the divorce! He’s the one who gave me the fake medical documents! He’s the one who told me what to say to Grant to make him turn against you and file for divorce! He promised me millions if we helped him destroy Mercer Hale from the inside!” I stared at her, letting her desperate confession hang heavily in the rainy air. It was the final piece of the puzzle, officially corroborating every digital trace Daniel had extracted from Sterling’s terminal. “I already know about Julian, Celeste,” I said quietly. “Federal marshals are already preparing his indictment as we speak. And your name is right beside his on the criminal conspiracy warrants.”
Celeste froze. The frantic sobbing stopped instantly, replaced by a terrifying, hollow silence. Her eyes widened in absolute horror as the full weight of what I was saying crashed down upon her. “Warrants... no... you can't do that... I was just a pawn—” “You were a willing participant in corporate espionage, medical fraud, and extortion,” I cut her off sharply. “You chose greed over basic human decency. And now you’re going to spend your twenties and thirties answering for every single lie you told.” Before Celeste could scream another plea or beg for mercy, a pair of headlights cut through the darkness down the winding residential road. A unmarked federal vehicle, accompanied by local law enforcement cruisers, pulled up alongside the estate gate, their blue and red emergency lights flashing silently against the wet cedar trees. Two federal agents stepped out of the vehicle, walking briskly toward the gate with heavy, purposeful strides.

Celeste turned around in absolute panic as the agents approached her from behind, grabbing her arms firmly and turning her away from the gate. She didn't fight them; her legs simply gave out, and the agents had to support her weight as they cuffed her wrists behind her back. She didn't look back at me as they led her toward the unmarked cruiser, her head bowed in absolute defeat. I stood motionless under the umbrella, watching until the red taillights of the federal car disappeared around the bend in the road, swallowed up by the dark Seattle mist. The nightmare was truly over. The conspirators were unmasked, the corporate raiders were ruined, and the architects of my betrayal were facing the full wrath of the law.
