Chapter 2 - The Declined Card

The following afternoon was bright and brisk across the manicured lawns of the Greenbrier Valley Country Club. Chloe sat at a corner terrace table overlooking the eighteenth green, wearing oversized designer sunglasses and adjusting the sleeves of her cream cashmere cardigan.

Across from her sat Mark, his hair slicked back in his customary corporate cut, tapping his fingers impatiently against the white linen tablecloth. Next to him, Susan was holding court, waving her gold-braceleted wrist as she addressed the lunch party.

"I simply told the board at the historical society that if they don't modernize the gallery, they won't see another nickel of my donor pledge," Susan said with an airy laugh, picking at her lobster salad. "One must maintain standards, Chloe darling. Never settle for ordinary. That is what separates our family from the herd."

"You are so right, Susan," Chloe agreed smoothly, offering her most practiced, radiant smile. "That’s exactly what I tell Mark. We have to surround ourselves with excellence. Speaking of which, the contractor for our kitchen renovation sent over the finalized marble estimates this morning. Italian Carrara, waterfall edges. Mark and I decided we aren't cutting any corners."

Mark grinned, leaning in. "We’re finally putting the deposit down on the architectural overhaul this afternoon. We’re doing the whole ground floor. Open concept, custom wine cellar, European white oak flooring."

"How marvelous!" Susan purred. "And the funding? Mark, you mentioned your little commercial venture needed that capital buffer."

"Oh, it's completely handled," Chloe said with effortless confidence, waving a dismissive hand. "Mom’s custodial account has over half a million sitting liquid. I have full secondary signer clearance. I told the general contractor that the eighty-thousand-dollar initial mobilization fee will clear his account by three o’clock today."

Mark checked his luxury watch. "Speaking of which, babe, lunch is on you today. My corporate account is cycling through the quarterly audit."

"Of course," Chloe said, reaching into her purse and pulling out the sleek black debit card tied directly to the Apex Private Wealth account. She had carried it for months like a badge of honor, occasionally using it for small luxury purchases that Clara had overlooked in the past. Today was the day she intended to start drawing on the real meat of the funds.

The waiter arrived, presenting the leather bill folder with a polite nod. "Whenever you're ready, ma'am."

Chloe dropped the card onto the silver tray without glancing at the total. "Take care of it, please. Add twenty-five percent."

"Thank you, Mrs. Holloway," the waiter murmured, stepping away toward the service terminal.

Susan adjusted her diamond earrings, leaning back. "Chloe, dear, your post yesterday was utterly divine. All my friends from the garden club texted me about it. You truly have an eye for aesthetic. It’s so refreshing to have someone in the family who understands pedigree. Your poor mother... well, she was always so delightfully *provincial*, wasn't she? Working in that dusty public library. I could never understand how someone could exist without ambition."

Chloe felt a brief prickle at the back of her neck, but she quickly smoothed it away with an amused smirk. "Mom is just... simple, Susan. She lives in her own little world of paperback books and coupon clipping. She doesn't understand the kind of lifestyle Mark and I are building. You have to speak her language, which is why I manage the financial side of things now."

The waiter returned, his expression taut and professional, holding the black leather folder in both hands. He leaned down slightly, speaking in a low, discreet murmur.

"I do apologize, Mrs. Holloway, but the transaction was declined."

Chloe froze. Her smile remained plastered on her face for a beat too long. "Declined? That’s impossible. Try it again. You must have entered the chip incorrectly."

"I ran it twice, ma'am," the waiter said softly. "The terminal returns code 05: 'Do Not Honor / Account Inactive.'"

Mark frowned, his eyes darting across the terrace where several acquaintances were dining. "Chloe, what is this? Just use the card."

"It’s an error on the club's terminal," Chloe snapped, snatching the card back. "I’ll run it through my digital banking app right now."

She pulled out her iPhone, opening the Apex Wealth portal with her Face ID. She navigated straight to the checking interface.

The screen loaded, but instead of the usual green numbers showing six figures, a bright red banner flashed across the top of the interface:

**ALERT: ACCESS PRIVILEGES REVOKED. YOU DO NOT HAVE AUTHORIZED ACCESS TO THIS PROFILE. CONTACT PRIMARY ACCOUNT HOLDER.**

Chloe’s heart gave a violent, sickening thud against her ribs.

"What does it say?" Mark demanded under his breath, leaning over the table. "Chloe?"

"It... it says access revoked," she whispered, her voice cracking slightly. She frantically refreshed the screen. The screen flashed again, redirecting her to a blank dashboard showing a checking balance of $0.00 and an error code.

"What do you mean, *revoked*?" Susan asked, her aristocratic tone suddenly sharpening into something thin and acidic. "Chloe, the contractor deposit is due at three o'clock. Mark's entire bridge loan for the retail acquisition is contingent on showing eighty thousand in liquid reserves by close of business!"

"I... I don't understand," Chloe stammered, the blood draining from her face. Her hands began to shake. "I’m on the signature card. I’ve always been on the card! Mom wouldn't touch this money. She never touches it!"

"Well, somebody touched it," Mark hissed, his face flushing crimson as he spotted the club manager lingering near the kitchen doors. "Pay the waiter with your personal card, Chloe! Now!"

Chloe fumbled through her wallet, pulling out her personal credit card. She handed it over with trembling fingers. The waiter swiped it, waited for the receipt, had her sign it, and walked away with a tight, knowing smile.

"Call her," Mark ordered, his voice dropping into a harsh, furious whisper. "Call your mother right now."

Chloe dialed Clara’s cell phone.

*Ring.*

*Ring.*

*Ring.*

*"The subscriber you are trying to reach is currently unavailable. Please leave a message after the tone."*

Chloe hung up and dialed again. Direct to voicemail.

"She’s not answering," Chloe gasped, panic finally clawing its way into her throat. "She always answers! She never ignores my calls!"

Susan pushed her chair back slightly, looking at Chloe not as a cherished daughter-in-law, but as an unexpected liability. "You assured us this capital was secure, Chloe. You assured Mark that your family's estate was backing this entire restructuring."

"It is! It was!" Chloe cried out, her voice loud enough to turn heads at the adjacent tables. She stood up, grabbing her designer bag. "I’m going to her house. There’s been a massive technical glitch at the bank. I’m going to fix it right now."
