Chapter 7 - Evelyn's Eviction

The Lake Forest neighborhood was one of the most exclusive enclaves in the Midwest, a place where manicured hedges, wrought-iron gates, and silent wealth reigned supreme.

At precisely 2:00 PM, that silence was shattered by the arrival of two white moving vans, three county sheriff cruisers, and a sleek black Lincoln Town Car.

Evelyn Vance, dressed in a lavender silk blouse, designer trousers, and wearing her signature four-carat diamond ring, rushed to the front door of her multi-million-dollar townhouse, screeching at the movers who were already unloading cardboard boxes onto her front lawn.

"What is the meaning of this outrage?!" Evelyn shrieked, waving her manicured hands in the air. "I am Evelyn Vance! My son is Victor Vance! Stop touching my antique Louis XIV sideboards this instant!"

The passenger door of the black Lincoln opened, and Margaret Sterling stepped out onto the cobblestone driveway.

She wore an elegant charcoal coat, leather gloves, and held a slim black leather umbrella against the light drizzle. Her posture was commanding, her expression serene and untroubled.

Evelyn froze, her mouth hanging open. "Margaret? Have you lost your mind? Tell these common laborers to leave my property! My son will sue you for every penny you have!"

Margaret walked slowly toward the stone steps, her boots clicking with deliberate authority.

"Your son is currently sitting in a holding cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center downtown, Evelyn," Margaret said calmly. "He has no bail. He has no lawyer willing to work on credit. And he has no property."

Evelyn's face turned ash-white. "You're lying! Victor is closing a major deal today! He's expanding his firm!"

"Victor has been indicted on twelve federal felony counts," Margaret said, stepping past Evelyn to glance into the opulent foyer. "And as it turns out, every monthly mortgage payment on this lovely townhouse was drawn directly from Arthur's medical care escrow account—an account Victor diverted two weeks before my husband passed away."

Margaret pulled a pair of pristine white documents from her coat pocket.

"This property has been seized under a writ of civil asset recovery," Margaret continued. "You have twenty minutes to collect your personal clothing and medication. The sheriff’s deputies will supervise you. All furnishings, artwork, and jewelry purchased after June of 2021 are property of the Sterling Estate."

"You can't do this to me!" Evelyn screamed, her voice turning shrill and hysterical as several neighbors began gathering at the edge of their driveways to watch. "I am an old woman! Where am I supposed to go?"

Margaret stopped, turning her gaze down upon Evelyn with a cold, piercing intensity that pinned the woman where she stood.

"Last night, Evelyn," Margaret said, her voice dropping to a low, unforgiving whisper, "while your son knocked my plate to the floor and told me to lick my food like an animal, you covered your mouth with a napkin to hide your laughter. You watched a widow being humiliated in her own home, and you relished it because you thought his cruelty cemented your luxury."

Evelyn swallowed hard, trembling from head to toe.

"I... I had nothing to do with that," Evelyn stammered, tears of humiliation welling in her eyes. "Victor has a temper... you know how men are..."

"I know how *predators* are," Margaret corrected her. "You raised a monster, Evelyn, and you profited from his theft. You will not spend another night sleeping under sheets paid for by Arthur Sterling's life's work. Take your suitcase and call an Uber. Just like my son-in-law, you're officially a tenant whose lease on cruelty has expired."

May you like

Margaret turned on her heel and walked back to the Lincoln, leaving Evelyn sobbing hysterically on the wet front lawn, surrounded by cardboard boxes and the cold stares of her wealthy neighbors.
