Chapter 4 - THE SPY IN THE HOUSE

Over the next forty-eight hours, I played the part of the compliant, placated husband. I smiled during dinner, agreed to discuss our "future plans," and even let Wendy browse luxury resort bookings for her upcoming Napa trip.
She swallowed the act hook, line, and sinker. Narcissists always mistake quiet strategy for submission.
While Wendy spent her afternoons shopping and booking spa sessions, my legal and investigative team worked around the clock. Marcus Vance filed an expedited emergency petition in state probate court, granting me temporary sole conservatorship over my mother’s estate and sealing all her financial records from external access.
Simultaneously, I hired a private digital forensics expert, Ray, to conduct a complete sweep of our household network and smart home devices.
On Thursday morning, while Wendy was out getting her nails done, Ray arrived at the house with a matte-black case full of diagnostic gear.
"Luca, your home is loaded with smart tech," Ray said, plugging a scanning tool into the main router. "Security cameras, smart locks, voice assistants, digital thermostats. If she’s been managing this house while you were away, there’s a massive digital footprint."
"Can you pull deleted cloud footage?" I asked.
Ray gave a sharp, confident nod. "Unless she physically destroyed the cloud servers at the provider's data center, deleted smart-home camera footage is easily recoverable within a thirty-day window. Most people think hitting 'delete' on their phone app erases the video. It just removes the pointer file."
For three hours, Ray worked silently in my office. By noon, he called me over to his monitor.
"You're going to want to sit down for this, Luca," Ray said, his tone dropping into a grim register.
He hit play on a recovered video file timestamped three weeks prior at 2:14 PM.
The camera angle was from the kitchen ceiling mount. The video showed my mother sitting peacefully at the kitchen island, eating a small bowl of soup. Wendy walked into the frame, grabbed the bowl directly out of my mother's hands, and dumped it into the sink.
When Mom reached out, asking softly why she couldn't finish her lunch, Wendy grabbed Mom’s right wrist—squeezing it forcefully until my mother cried out in pain—and dragged her toward the pantry.
“You don't eat until I say you eat!” Wendy’s voice boomed clearly through the speaker. “If you complain to Luca, I’ll tell him you tried to hit me and we’ll put you in a state facility where nobody will ever visit you!”
The video showed Wendy shoving my frail mother into the dark pantry, pulling the door shut, and sliding the brass latch into place.
I sat frozen in my chair, my knuckles turning white against the armrests. The sheer, unadulterated malice captured on high-definition video with clear audio was chilling. It wasn't just neglect; it was torture and extortion.
"There's more," Ray said quietly.
He opened a second file—this one an audio recording captured by the living room smart speaker ten days ago.
Wendy’s voice was crisp and clear as she spoke on the phone to someone named Chloe.
“She signed the third authorization today,” Wendy was heard laughing over the line. “The old bat actually thinks she’s saving Luca’s mortgage. I’m transferring another five grand on Friday. Make sure the transfer stays under the five-thousand threshold so the automated audit system doesn't flag it. Once I get another twenty grand out of her trust, I’m filing for divorce and taking half of Luca’s equity.”
Chloe’s voice replied: “What if Luca checks his mother’s statements?”
Wendy scoffed: “He won't. He trusts me completely. Besides, if he ever asks, I’ll just tell him his mom is demented and spending her pension on online shopping. He’ll believe me.”
Ray looked at me. "I've backed up all forty-eight recovered video and audio files onto an encrypted drive. I've also generated a certified forensic report detailing the metadata, IP addresses, and timestamps. This is bulletproof evidence in any criminal or civil court."
"Thank you, Ray," I said quietly, handing him his payment. "Upload a copy directly to Marcus Vance’s legal portal."
By 4:00 PM, Marcus called me with an update on the bank insider.
"Luca, First National Bank's internal affairs team just struck," Marcus reported excitedly. "They confronted Chloe Miller this afternoon regarding the unauthorized transfers. Under questioning, Chloe broke down completely and confessed that Wendy paid her a ten percent kickback on every fraudulent wire transfer she processed without proper verification."
"Did she sign a confession?"
"A full, written, notarized confession," Marcus confirmed. "The bank has already turned the evidence over to the State District Attorney's Financial Crimes Unit. The prosecutor has opened a formal criminal indictment case against your wife for bank fraud, conspiracy, identity theft, and grand larceny."
"What about the physical abuse charges?"
"Dr. Aris's medical report, combined with Ray’s recovered smart-home video of Wendy physically assaulting your mother and locking her in the pantry, fulfills every legal metric for Felony Elder Abuse and False Imprisonment," Marcus said, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "The arrest warrants were signed thirty minutes ago."
I closed my eyes, feeling a profound wave of cold satisfaction wash over me.
The trap was fully set. The evidence was absolute. The legal machinery was moving into place.
"When do they execute the warrants?" I asked.
"Tomorrow morning at ten o'clock," Marcus said. "I've arranged for the police to serve her at the house. But before they arrive, we are serving her with the civil divorce papers and an emergency freeze on all her assets."

I walked over to the living room window and looked out at the peaceful, manicured lawn. Tomorrow, the woman who had terrorized my mother, stolen her dignity, and systematically bled her life savings would face the full, unyielding force of the law.
And I was going to sit in the front row and watch her entire world crumble.
