Chapter 8 - The Public Reckoning

The moment the gavel struck the sounding block, the back doors of Courtroom 302 burst open once again.

A dozen armed Federal Marshals and Special Agents wearing windbreakers with gold *DOJ* lettering surged into the room, fanning out with practiced tactical precision. The exits were sealed. The gallery erupted into total chaos as reporters scrambled to hold their microphones high, shouting questions above the din.

“Marcus Howell, Arthur Vance, Eleanor Vance, Fiona Vance,” Special Agent Olivia Evans commanded, stepping past the defense table with four pairs of heavy steel handcuffs hanging from her fingers. “Place your hands behind your backs. All of you.”

“No! No! You can’t do this to me!” Eleanor shrieked, backing away toward the corner of the plaintiff table. Her designer handbag fell, spilling gold lipstick tubes, credit cards, and expensive compacts across the floor. “I am William Vance’s daughter-in-law! I am a pillar of this community! Claire, tell them! Tell them to stop this! I gave birth to you!”

I stood at the defense table, completely motionless, watching her with cold detachment.

“You didn’t give birth to a daughter, Eleanor,” I said, my voice cutting through her hysterical screaming with deadly calm. “You gave birth to an asset you thought you could trade, manipulate, and discard when she stopped being useful. Grandfather knew what you were. He spent the last six months of his life helping me assemble the iron cage you just locked yourself into.”

A female federal agent grabbed Eleanor’s wrists, pulling them firmly behind her back. The steel cuffs clicked shut with a sharp, brutal finality.

Arthur lunged toward Marcus Howell, his face purple with rage, spit flying from his lips. “You ruined us! You told us this was foolproof! You said Reynolds had the probate court locked down! You took sixty thousand dollars in cash advances from me to set this up!”

Marcus Howell stumbled backward, raising his cuffed hands in surrender, his tailored suit completely rumpled, his hair disheveled. “Arthur, shut your mouth! Exercise your right to remain silent, you imbecile! Everything you say is being recorded!”

“Shut up! Shut up!” Arthur roared, swinging his cuffed hands wildly before two burly US Marshals tackled him to the floor, pinning him face-down against the worn carpet.

“Arthur Vance, you are under arrest!” the Marshal barked, driving a knee into Arthur’s back and wrenching his arms into position to lock the double-cuffs. “Stop resisting!”

And then there was Fiona.

My little sister sat paralyzed in her chair. Her ring-light smartphone lay on the table in front of her, still broadcasting everything.

The viewer count had climbed to an astronomical three point eight million people.

The live chat was a relentless, unforgiving torrent of public disgust:

*“LOOK AT HER CRYING NOW!”*

*“THE WHOLE FAMILY IS GOING TO FEDERAL PRISON!”*

*“Fiona literally broadcasted her own federal arrest on live stream!”*

*“Worst sister of the century!”*

*“Karma came for them in 4K!”*

“Claire... please...” Fiona sobbed, fat tears streaming down her perfectly contoured cheeks, ruining her expensive mascara until dark tracks ran down her neck. “Claire, I was just doing what Mom and Dad told me! I didn't know it was illegal! I swear I didn't know! Please don't let them take me to jail! My career... my followers... Claire, we’re sisters!”

Olivia stepped up behind Fiona, reaching down and picking up the phone. Olivia looked directly into the camera lens, holding up her gold Department of Justice badge for nearly four million viewers to see.

“To the three point eight million people watching this stream,” Olivia said smoothly. “Fiona Vance is currently being taken into federal custody for felony burglary, wire fraud, and tampering with an active Department of Justice investigation. This broadcast is now concluded as federal evidence.”

Olivia tapped the screen, ending the stream. The screen went black.

Olivia gently pulled Fiona’s arms behind her back. When the cold steel snapped around Fiona’s delicate wrists, my sister let out a mournful, guttural wail that echoed off the wood-paneled walls like a dying animal.

The local news cameras in the gallery were rolling, catching every second of the Vance family being marched down the center aisle of the courtroom.

Reporters shouted over one another:

*“Arthur, did you plan to launder the entire five million?”*

*“Eleanor, how long have you been defrauding the elderly in Jackson County?”*

*“Fiona! Any comment for your three million followers?”*

They were pushed through the double doors, out into the blinding flashbulbs of fifty more photographers waiting in the marble corridors outside. Their disgrace was total, unmitigated, and broadcast to the entire world.

David Sterling walked over to where I stood, offering a warm, respectful nod.

“Excellent work, Supervisory Agent Vance,” Sterling said, offering his hand. “The asset freeze against Howell’s offshore accounts just cleared. We’ve recovered over eighteen million dollars across nine different defrauded estates, in addition to securing your grandfather’s full five-million-dollar trust.”

I shook his hand firmly. “Thank you, David.”

“Take some time off, Claire,” he added softly. “You’ve earned it.”

I watched the empty courtroom doors slowly swing shut, leaving behind only the scattered papers and the broken cigar Arthur had dropped on the floor.

The war was over. And for the first time in thirty-two years, I could finally breathe.
