Chapter 13 - The Hammer of Justice

"In the matter of the Bennett Family Estate," Judge Raymond Miller declared, his voice ringing through Department 12 like a church bell, "this court finds that Brenda Bennett has engaged in gross breach of fiduciary duty, commingling of estate assets, and active facilitation of document fraud."

Brenda let out a small, strangled gasp. Her attorney, Higgins, closed his eyes and slumped into his chair.

"Effective immediately," Judge Miller ordered, "Brenda Bennett is removed as executor of the Estate of Charles E. Bennett. Arthur Vance, Esq., is hereby appointed independent permanent trustee with full executive authority over all residual assets."

Arthur bowed his head. "Thank you, Your Honor."

"Furthermore," the judge continued, writing rapidly on the docket sheet, "a civil surcharge judgment is hereby entered against Brenda Bennett and Rachel Carter, jointly and severally, in the amount of four hundred and ten thousand dollars, representing the liquidated municipal bonds and improper disbursements. A judicial lien is placed upon the real property located at 4120 Fair Oaks Boulevard, Carmichael, California, to secure repayment."

Brenda clutched her chest. "My house... you're taking my house?!"

"You took your grandchildren's future, Mrs. Bennett," Judge Miller snapped, his patience completely exhausted. "You are fortunate that Mr. Vance has not yet requested immediate contempt detention. That issue will be determined by the District Attorney."

The judge turned his pen toward the educational trust.

"Regarding the Charles E. Bennett Descendants’ Educational Trust: The court finds that Emma Bennett’s designated share of eighty thousand dollars is fully vested and free from any administrative obstruction. The Western Heritage Bank is directed to release twenty thousand dollars immediately to Stanford University for tuition deposit and matriculation expenses, with the balance to be disbursed in equal annual installments directly to the registrar."

Emma let out a ragged breath, leaning her head against my shoulder. I wrapped my arm around her waist, holding her so tightly I could feel the rapid flutter of her heart.

"As for the remaining beneficiaries, Noah and Evan Carter," Judge Miller concluded, "their respective eighty-thousand-dollar shares will remain locked in court-supervised sub-accounts under the sole management of Trustee Vance until their eighteenth birthdays. Neither Rachel Carter nor Gregory Carter shall have any access, oversight, or claim to these funds under any circumstances."

The judge slammed his gavel onto the sounding block with a sharp, final *CRACK.*
