Chapter 9 - The New Foundation

Six months later, the spring thaw had washed away every trace of that violent winter.
The Lincoln Park district was bathed in the warm, golden sunshine of late May. The trees lining the boulevard were in full, glorious bloom, scattering pink and white petals across the immaculate stone sidewalks.
In front of a magnificent, restored four-story limestone mansion, a large crowd of local families, pediatric nurses, community leaders, and press reporters had gathered beneath colorful banners that read:
THE COLLINS PEDIATRIC FOUNDATION & REFUGE: HEALING FAMILIES, PROTECTING INNOCENCE.
I stood at the podium on the front steps, wearing an elegant ivory sheath dress that gracefully masked the faint scar on my thigh. My dark hair was swept up in a loose chignon, the antique diamond ring catching the morning light with every gesture.
Beside me, looking impossibly handsome in a charcoal bespoke suit with a lavender silk tie that matched Lily’s sundress, stood Luca. In his arms, he held our daughter, who was happily waving a miniature American flag at the smiling photographers.
“For too long,” I spoke into the microphone, my voice ringing clear and steady through the quiet morning air, “this city has overlooked the children caught in the crossfire of adult choices. This facility will not just provide free, state-of-the-art medical care; it will provide a safe haven where no child will ever be hidden away, forgotten, or told they are unloved.”
Applause thundered across the street. Camera shutters clicked in a dazzling flurry of flashes.
As I stepped back from the podium, Luca passed Lily into the waiting arms of Mrs. Higgins, reached for my hand, and pulled me into his arms right in front of the assembled press corps. He kissed me with an open, unashamed devotion that made the cameras flash twice as fast.
“You were brilliant, Mrs. Moretti,” he whispered against my lips, using my new legal name that had been made official in a quiet courthouse ceremony three weeks earlier.
“Only because you built the stage, Mr. Moretti,” I laughed softly, resting my palms against his broad lapels.
“Daddy! Mama! Look!”
Lily’s squeal turned our heads.
At the bottom of the limestone steps, an enormous golden retriever puppy, wearing an oversized blue ribbon around its neck, was bounding toward her across the lawn. The puppy tumbled into Lily’s arms, covering her face in enthusiastic, wet kisses while she shrieked with pure, uncontrollable joy.
Daniel stood nearby, hands clasped behind his back, a rare, genuine smile softening the harsh scars on his weathered face. “A house warming gift from the security staff, Boss. Trained for executive protection... and afternoon naps.”
Luca laughed, wrapping his arm around my shoulders, drawing me close against his side as we watched our daughter roll in the fresh green clover with her new guardian.

“She’s happy, Luca,” I murmured, leaning my cheek against his shoulder. “Really, truly happy.”
“We all are,” Luca said, pressing a warm kiss to my temple. “And this is only the beginning.”
