Chapter 15 - Three Times the Love

The afternoon sun poured generously through the living room windows, washing the hardwood floors in a warm, golden glow that felt entirely earned after the months of darkness we had endured.
Robert sat in the armchair across from us, holding Noah with a care so delicate his weathered hands trembled slightly. The baby was swaddled in a pale blue blanket, his tiny chest rising and falling in peaceful slumber against his grandfather’s chest. The lines on Robert’s face seemed deeper than they had months ago, but the perpetual shadow of exhaustion and subjugation that had once defined him was gone. He looked lighter—a man who had finally set down a burden he had carried for thirty years.
"He has your eyes, Michael," Robert murmured softly, not daring to move for fear of waking the infant. "Though thank God he has Lauren’s temperament."
I smiled, sitting cross-legged on the sofa with Maya resting securely against my chest while Michael kept a watchful, tender eye on Liam in the bassinet beside us.
"We’re heading down to the coast on Tuesday," Robert said quietly, looking up from Noah. "The house in Medina is officially sold. The lawyers finished the final asset transfers this morning. Denise... well, her trial date has been set for late autumn. Her new defense team is trying to claim diminished capacity, but the paper trail is too vast. She won't be coming back."
There was no malice in his voice, only the flat, accepting tone of someone reading the weather report after a hurricane had finally passed.
"Will you be okay out there on the coast by yourself?" Michael asked, his voice softening with a sudden, unexpected wave of filial concern.
Robert offered a faint, tired smile. "I’ll be more than okay, son. For the first time in my life, I’m going to learn who I am when I’m not serving an empire that devours everyone who touches it. And..." He paused, looking down at Noah with a deeply tender expression. "I’ll be close enough to drive up for birthdays. If... if you’ll have me."
"Under our terms," I said gently, meeting his eyes with unwavering clarity. "No secrets, no hidden agendas, and no entitlement."
Robert nodded slowly, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "Under your terms, Lauren. Absolutely."
When Robert left an hour later, stepping out into the crisp autumn air with a quiet dignity he hadn't possessed when we first met him at that fateful family dinner, the house felt entirely, beautifully still.
Michael locked the front door, walked back into the living room, and collapsed onto the sofa beside me, wrapping his arm around my shoulders and pulling us both close.
On the coffee table sat the yellow envelope I had carried out of the doctor's office months ago—the one with *Three times the love* written across the front in my own handwriting, back when the future was terrifying and unknown.
I reached out, picked up the envelope, and slid the pristine ultrasound photographs back inside. They were no longer just promises of what might be; they were living, breathing proof of what we had fought to protect.
"What are you thinking about?" Michael asked, resting his chin softly on the top of my head.
"I was thinking about that night at your mother's dinner table," I smiled, looking down at the three little miracles sleeping peacefully around us. "When she laughed because she thought we couldn't handle three babies."
Michael chuckled, a warm, rich sound that filled the room with absolute joy. "And what do you think now?"
May you like
I leaned back against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful beat of his heart matching my own, surrounded by the sweet, milky scent of newborn life.
"I think she had no idea what we were truly capable of."
