Chapter 7 - The Breach

Red emergency lights flashed along the mahogany moldings of the conservatory ceiling. The estate’s automated lockdown system slammed steel shutters over the massive windows with heavy, echoing thuds.
Dante’s voice crackled through the wall intercom: *"Boss! Multiple breaches at the south and east gates! Callaghan sent four utility trucks through the stone walls! Heavy assault teams, automatic weapons! They cut the main power lines!"*
Matteo’s expression instantly turned to liquid iron. The gentle host vanished; the warlord returned.
"Sarah, listen to me," Matteo commanded, taking her by the shoulders. His voice was steady, commanding, instantly slicing through the sudden burst of adrenaline in the room. "The master bedroom on the second floor has a hidden steel vault behind the bookshelf. Go there. Take Emma. Lock the door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except me or Dante. Do you understand?"
"Matteo, they're here for us—"
"They are here because Declan Callaghan is a dead man who doesn't know it yet," Matteo said. He reached into his waistband, pulled out a compact Glock 19, and pressed it into her hand. "Do you remember what I taught you yesterday about the safety?"
Sarah looked at the cold black polymer, her hand trembling for a second before her mother’s instinct took over. She nodded firmly. "Thumb down. Aim center mass."
"Good girl. Run. Now!"
Sarah turned and sprinted toward the main staircase with her cane tucked under her arm, screaming Emma’s name.
Matteo didn't run to hide. He turned toward the gun locker disguised in the wood paneling of the hallway. He pulled out a customized Benelli M4 tactical shotgun, racked a shell into the chamber with a brutal *clack*, and stepped out into the grand foyer just as the front oak double doors blew inward under a hail of C4 explosive.
Smoke, plaster dust, and freezing air rushed into the mansion.
Through the fog stepped six men dressed in black tactical gear, armed with submachine guns. Leading them was Declan Callaghan’s younger brother, Tommy—a psychotic enforcer known throughout Boston for his cruelty.
"Find the girl!" Tommy screamed over the ringing alarms. "Kill the guards! Burn this whole damn place to—"
Tommy never finished the sentence.
Matteo stepped out from behind a marble pillar on the mezzanine landing, leveled the Benelli, and pulled the trigger.
The heavy 12-gauge slug hit Tommy center-chest, lifting his two-hundred-pound frame off his feet and throwing him back out onto the shattered porch steps.
Before the remaining five gunmen could elevate their barrels, Matteo fired three more rounds with surgical speed and devastating precision. Plaster shattered, blood sprayed against the marble floor, and two more mercenaries collapsed in heaps of shredded nylon and lead.
"Cover!" one of the survivors screamed, diving behind an overturned antique settee.
Gunfire ripped through the foyer. Hundreds of high-velocity rounds chewed through the grand staircase, tearing centuries-old oil paintings to ribbons and sending crystal rain from the shattered chandelier above.
Matteo dropped behind the stone balustrade, unclipped a flashbang grenade from his belt, pulled the pin with his teeth, and tossed it over the edge into the foyer below.
*BANG.*
A blinding white flash and an ear-splitting concussive roar shook the mansion’s foundation.
Matteo vaulted over the railing, dropping ten feet to the marble floor like a cat. He drew his .45 from his shoulder holster while landing, firing twice into the disoriented shooter behind the sofa, then spinning to put a round through the temple of the last man attempting to raise an Uzi.
Silence returned to the foyer, save for the wailing alarm and the hissing of punctured water pipes.
Matteo stood amidst the carnage, his suit covered in white plaster dust, the barrel of his sidearm smoking.
Suddenly, a gunshot echoed from the second floor.
Matteo’s heart stopped.
*Emma. Sarah.*
Matteo sprinted up the ruined staircase three steps at a time, disregarding all tactical protocol. He rounded the corridor toward the master bedroom, his weapon raised, his eyes wide with a frantic, desperate fear he had never felt in any gang war.
Outside the master vault door, a mercenary lay sprawled on his back on the Persian runner rug, clutching his shoulder and screaming in agony.
Standing in the open vault doorway was Sarah.
She held the Glock in a textbook two-handed grip, her knuckles white, smoke curling from the barrel. Emma was behind her, peeking out from behind her mother’s legs, holding the teddy bear tightly against her chest.
Sarah’s eyes were wild, fierce, and entirely transformed. She wasn't the battered victim of Dorchester anymore. She was a mother who had drawn a line in the sand and defended her cub.
When she saw Matteo, the weapon slowly lowered. Her knees buckled under the weight of the adrenaline crash.
Matteo caught her before she hit the floor, gathering her against his chest.
"I got him," Sarah sobbed into his neck, trembling violently. "He tried to touch the handle... and I shot him, Matteo."
"I see," Matteo whispered, stroking her hair, his own heart hammering against his ribs like a sledgehammer. He looked down at Emma, who reached up and grabbed his hand.
"Are you okay, Matt?" Emma asked, her hazel eyes clear and steady.
Matteo looked at the bodies in the hall, then down at the woman and child in his arms. The time for half-measures had passed. Declan Callaghan had dared to bring violence into the one sanctuary Matteo had built for the people he loved.
"I'm fine, Emma," Matteo said, his voice lowering into an icy vow of absolute finality. "Stay here with your mother. Dante’s team is securing the perimeter."
He gently helped Sarah sit against the vault wall, turned around, and walked past the groaning shooter on the floor.

Matteo drew his phone. "Dante. Bring the war wagons to the front gate. Tonight, we wipe Declan Callaghan and his entire syndicate off the face of the earth."
