Chapter 11 - The Rat in the Cell

The Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn was a brutal, concrete tomb designed to strip every shred of dignity from the human soul. There were no chandeliers here. No vintage Cabernets. No silk pocket squares.

Garrett sat in an interrogation cubicle on the third floor, his cuffed hands resting flat on the cold steel table. His orange jumpsuit was stained with grease from the cafeteria trays; his fingernails were bitten down to the quick, raw and bleeding.

Sitting across from him was not a friend, not an investor, and not his mother.

It was Detective Miller and Assistant U.S. Attorney Amanda Chen.

"Let’s be very clear about where you stand, Mr. Vance," Amanda Chen said, opening a manila folder filled with forensic accounting spreadsheets. "The grand jury has added six counts of federal tax evasion and three counts of witness tampering to your docket."

Garrett flinched, pulling his head into his shoulders like a turtle retreating into its shell. "Witness tampering? What witness tampering?! I haven't spoken to anyone!"

"You called Chloe Campbell four times from the detention center intake phone on Tuesday night," Detective Miller said, pulling out an audio log. "You told her, and I quote: *‘Keep your mouth shut about the Cayman drive or I’ll make sure you never work in this city again, you stupid bitch.’*"

Garrett’s jaw worked soundlessly. His eyes darted around the concrete room, searching for an escape hatch that didn't exist. "I... I was emotional. I was trying to protect our business."

"You don't have a business, Garrett," Chen said coldly. "You have a federal paper shredder. Your mother has already given three voluntary proffer statements to our investigators."

Garrett froze. The blood drained from his face so fast he looked like a corpse sitting upright.

"My... my mother?" he whispered, his voice cracking. "What did she say?"

Chen smiled—a small, razor-sharp smirk that promised total annihilation. She tapped a button on her tablet, playing an audio recording taken from Vivian’s proffer session at the federal courthouse six hours earlier.

Vivian’s haughty voice, stripped of its socialite polish, came through the speaker, frantic and treacherous:

*“...it was all Garrett! You have to understand, he was desperate! He had lost seven hundred thousand dollars playing underground poker on 58th Street! The bookmakers were threatening to break his legs! He came to me crying, begging me to show him how to access Arthur Montgomery’s trust accounts! I told him it was illegal! I told him Claire would find out! But he forced me to help him! He held the power of attorney over my condo! He threatened to throw me onto the street if I didn't help him route the wires to Apex Horizon! I was a victim of my son’s abuse! Please... you have to grant me immunity, I’ll testify against him!”*

The audio clicked off.

The silence inside the interrogation cubicle was suffocating.

Garrett sat paralyzed, staring at the small black speaker as if it were a venomous snake that had just struck him in the throat. His hands began to shake violently, the stainless steel handcuffs rattling against the table.

"She... she blamed me?" Garrett’s voice was barely a squeak. "She said *I* forced *her*?"

"She offered to take the stand as the government's star witness, Garrett," Detective Miller said, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the table. "She offered to authenticate your handwriting on forty-two forged corporate resolutions. She offered to turn over the encrypted passwords to the Swiss intermediary accounts in exchange for a plea deal that keeps her out of prison."

"The Swiss accounts..." Garrett muttered, his eyes widening in pure horror. "She told me those accounts were in my name. She told me she set them up to protect my inheritance!"

"They aren't in your name, Mr. Vance," Chen stated with devastating simplicity. "They are registered to an offshore foundation controlled entirely by Vivian Vance and her private wealth advisor in Zurich. You were never going to see that money. Even if your scheme had worked, your mother was planning to leave for Geneva the moment your divorce from Claire was finalized."

Garrett let out a ragged, choking sound that was half-sob, half-scream. He grabbed his hair with his cuffed hands, pulling violently, rocking back and forth in his metal chair.

"She played me..." he wept, tears streaming down his grimy face. "My own mother... she used me to steal from Claire, and she was going to leave me with the debt!"

"She threw you to the wolves, Garrett," Miller said, his voice dropping to a low, persuasive rumble. "Just like you threw Claire to the wolves at L’Étoile. The only difference is, Claire had the intelligence and the resources to fight back. You have nothing. You are facing thirty-five years in federal prison. When you get out, you will be sixty-eight years old. You will have no money, no career, no family, and no reputation."

Garrett looked up, his eyes wild, bloodshot, and completely unhinged. "What do you want? Tell me what you want!"

Amanda Chen pulled out a fresh, blank cooperation agreement. She laid it flat on the steel table, placing a black pen beside it.

"We want the unredacted master ledger for Vivian Vance’s historical tax fraud," Chen said, tapping the paper. "We know she operated an unregistered offshore trust for ten years before you ever met Claire Montgomery. We know she hid twelve million dollars from the IRS following your father’s bankruptcy. Give us the ledger, Garrett. Sign the proffer. Testify against your mother."

Garrett stared at the document.

Five years of calculated vanity, five years of smug arrogance, five years of looking down on his wife as an emotional ATM—all of it had brought him to this single, pathetic moment: sitting in a windowless room in Brooklyn, holding a cheap plastic pen, about to send his own mother to prison to save himself from dying behind bars.

He didn't hesitate. He didn't shed another tear for Vivian.

Garrett grabbed the pen with trembling, sweat-slicked fingers and pressed the tip to the paper.

"Give me the immunity clause," Garrett hissed, his eyes burning with pure, unadulterated venom. "I’ll give you everything she ever did."
