Chapter 16 - The Trial of Megan Peterson

The criminal trial of Megan Peterson began on a freezing Tuesday morning in mid-January.
Unlike the bail hearings, the courtroom was not filled with sensationalist energy. It was heavy, solemn, and suffocating with the weight of impending justice.
Megan sat at the defense table in a modest, ill-fitting dark blue blazer provided by her public defender. Her hair was cut short to her shoulders, unstyled and limp. She kept her eyes glued to the polished wood of the table, never once looking toward the gallery.
Assistant State’s Attorney Sarah Lin delivered an opening statement that was a masterclass in prosecutorial precision.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury," Lin began, her voice echoing in the silent room. "This case is not about a turkey dinner. It is not about family tension. It is about an adult woman who used her physical strength to brutalize a five-year-old child because that child dared to speak politely at a dining room table."
Lin walked over to the evidence easel and uncovered a massive, four-foot-high photograph of Lily's face taken at Northwestern Memorial Hospital two hours after the assault.
Several jurors gasped. Two women in the front row visibly recoiled.
The photograph showed the distinct, raised outline of Megan’s heavy sapphire dinner ring pressed into the swollen, purple-and-blue flesh of Lily’s cheekbone.
"The defense will tell you this was discipline," Lin said, pointing at the photograph. "The State will prove to you that this was an act of malicious, unprovoked violence born from jealousy, entitlement, and cruelty."
Over the next three days, the prosecution dismantled the Peterson family piece by piece.
Dr. Marcus Vance took the stand as an expert witness, explaining the biomechanics of the strike with clinical detachment.
"The force required to produce this degree of subdermal petechiae in a forty-pound pediatric subject," Marcus testified, pointing to the medical charts, "is equivalent to thirty-five pounds of direct kinetic pressure. That is not a 'tap.' That is a full-force adult strike intended to inflict maximum physical pain."
Then came the state's secret weapon.
During the discovery phase, Arthur Vance’s digital forensics team had subpoenaed the cloud recordings from the 'smart' dining room chandelier Frank had installed in the brownstone six months earlier—a system Frank had completely forgotten possessed an active audio recording buffer linked to their home automation hub.
Sarah Lin pressed 'play' on the courtroom audio console.
The silence in the courtroom was absolute as the clear, digital audio filled the room:
> *[Clinking of glasses, polished laughter]*
> *Carol: 'Lily, eat your turkey. Don't be ungrateful.'*
> *Lily's tiny voice: 'Thank you, Grandma. May I please have the drumstick instead?'*
> *Megan's sharp voice: 'You disrespectful little brat. If your mother won't teach you how to behave, I will.'*
> *[LOUD, CRACKING SLAP]*
> *[Sound of a chair violently scraping]*
> *[Lily’s gasping, terrified breath]*
> *Megan: 'Children need discipline. You coddle her, Chloe. That's why she behaves like she's spoiled.'*
> *[Chloe’s voice, cold as ice: 'What the hell did you just do?']*
> *[Megan: 'She needed to—']*
> *[TWO THUNDEROUS, EXPLOSIVE SLAPS]*
> *[Carol shrieking; Megan crying]*
> *Chloe's voice: 'The first was for Lily. The second was to make sure you understand that you will never lay a hand on my daughter again.'*
The jury sat entirely motionless. One of the alternate jurors had her hand pressed over her mouth in shock.
The audio didn't lie. It showed that Lily had been polite; it showed that Megan’s strike was immediate, violent, and unprovoked; and it showed that my response was precise, protective, and final.
The defense called zero witnesses.
Megan refused to take the stand.
The jury deliberated for precisely forty-two minutes.
When the foreperson stood up to read the verdict, Megan was shaking so violently her chair rattled against the floorboards.
"On the count of Aggravated Battery of a Child Under Thirteen Years of Age," the foreperson read, "we find the defendant, Megan Peterson... **GUILTY.**"
"On the count of Reckless Conduct Causing Bodily Harm... **GUILTY.**"
"On the count of Child Endangerment... **GUILTY.**"
Megan let out a high, thin wail and collapsed face-first onto the defense table.
Judge Jenkins didn't wait. She ordered Megan remanded to immediate custody without bail pending formal sentencing, where she faced a mandatory minimum of four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

As the bailiffs clicked the heavy iron cuffs around Megan's wrists and led her through the heavy steel door, I felt the final lingering knot of tension in my chest dissolve into pure, clean air.
