Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Coup

At 9:15 AM, Mark Mercer arrived at the corporate headquarters of Vanguard Consulting in downtown's premier glass-and-steel business park.

He drove his metallic silver Porsche 911, parking horizontally across two reserved spaces near the front entrance, just as he did every morning. He stepped out of the vehicle adjusting his Italian silk tie, humming softly to himself.

He felt a slight headache from the scotch the night before, but in his mind, the minor disturbance of Emma’s birthday party was already behind him. Women were dramatic creatures, he had told himself during the drive. Sarah would stay at some cheap hotel for twenty-four hours, burn through a couple hundred dollars of her personal savings, realize she had no money and nowhere else to go, and come crawling back to the house to beg for forgiveness.

By tonight, he figured, she would be back in the kitchen, Diane would have her respect, and order would be restored.

Mark pushed through the revolving glass doors of Vanguard's lobby, offering a casual nod to the security guard at the front desk.

"Morning, Carl," Mark said breezily, walking toward the high-speed executive elevators.

"Uh… Mr. Mercer?" Carl called out, his voice uncharacteristically tense.

Mark paused, frowning. "Yes?"

Carl stepped out from behind the desk, looking intensely uncomfortable. Standing beside him were two off-duty police officers hired for private building security.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Mercer," Carl mumbled, staring at the floor. "Your keycard has been deactivated. I have strict instructions from the corporate legal counsel. You’re not permitted past the lobby turnstiles."

Mark let out a sharp, barking laugh. "Carl, are you out of your mind? I’m Mark Mercer. I’m the founder and CEO of this company. My name is on the damn building sign!"

"Not according to the state corporate registry, Mr. Mercer," a crisp, commanding voice echoed across the marble lobby.

Mark whipped around.

Walking toward him was Eleanor Vance, flanked by two junior associates carrying thick black leather briefcases, and Marcus Reed, the company’s chief financial controller.

Mark’s face drained of color for a fraction of a second before twisting into irritation. "Eleanor? What the hell are you doing here? Did Sarah send you? Tell my wife to stop playing these ridiculous high school games and pick up her damn phone!"

Eleanor stopped three feet from him, her hands folded neatly in front of her. She looked at him the way an exterminator looks at a common house roach.

"This is not a high school game, Mark," Eleanor said evenly. "I am here as legal counsel representing Apex Horizon Holdings—the parent company that holds fifty-one percent of the voting shares of Vanguard Consulting."

She snapped her fingers. Her associate instantly handed Mark a thick, foil-embossed document.

"What is this garbage?" Mark sneered, though his fingers trembled slightly as he took the paper.

"That is an emergency resolution passed by the majority shareholder at eight-thirty this morning," Eleanor explained, her voice carrying cleanly across the echoing lobby. "Your executive powers as Chief Executive Officer have been suspended, effective immediately. Your discretionary spending lines have been terminated. A full forensic audit of Vanguard's financial records has commenced to investigate multiple instances of unauthorized corporate transfers to non-employee family members—specifically, Diane Mercer."

Mark’s jaw dropped. The paper rattled in his grip.

"You can't do this!" he stammered, his voice climbing an octave. "I built this firm! I brought in the clients! Sarah didn't do anything! She’s a housewife!"

Marcus Reed, the CFO who had spent five years silently cleaning up Mark’s catastrophic accounting blunders, stepped forward.

"Actually, Mark," Marcus said coldly, "Sarah built the infrastructure, Sarah secured the initial bridge loans, and Sarah is the registered primary guarantor on our lines of credit. You are an employee and a minority shareholder. And right now, the locks on the executive suite are being changed."

"This is an ambush!" Mark shouted, his face turning an alarming shade of plum purple. Several employees arriving for work had stopped near the turnstiles, whispering and pulling out their phones. "I will sue you into the dirt, Eleanor! I will take every penny she has! She’s living in my house!"

Eleanor smiled. It was the coldest, most terrifying expression Mark had ever seen.

"That brings me to my next delivery," Eleanor said smoothly.

She pulled a bright neon-pink legal envelope from her bag and slapped it directly against Mark’s chest.

"That is a formal thirty-day notice to quit and vacate the premises of 1442 Whispering Pines Drive," Eleanor declared. "The property is wholly owned by Sarah Vance-Holt under a separate sole-and-separate-property deed. You have thirty days to remove your personal effects. If you approach Sarah or the children, you will be arrested for violating the emergency order of protection currently being filed with the district court."

Mark staggered backward, the documents slipping from his fingers and scattering across the lobby floor.

"My... my house?" Mark wheezed, looking like he had been struck in the solar plexus with a sledgehammer. "She’s kicking me out of my own house?!"

May you like

"It was never your house, Mark," Eleanor whispered, leaning in close enough that only he could hear. "You just slept there. Now pick up your papers and leave this building before the officers escort you out in handcuffs."
