Chapter 6 - The Unspoken Night

Lena felt the heat of Julian's touch radiate through her skin, threatening to dismantle the walls she had spent years building around her heart. She took a deliberate step back, breaking the contact.
"You can't just take over, Julian," she said, her voice shaking slightly. "You can't buy my life, and you can't buy my daughter."
Julian’s hand dropped slowly to his side, his expression closing off like an iron vault. "I am not buying anyone. I am claiming my daughter. And protecting the woman who saved my life."
"Protecting me?" Lena gave a bitter laugh. "From who? Your world is what put us in danger in the first place!"
"Do you really think you were safe in that rat-infested studio on 24th Street?" Julian countered, taking a step toward her. His voice remained controlled, but the intensity behind it was suffocating. "Victor Rossi's lieutenants have been canvassing that neighborhood for two weeks, squeezing landlords, looking for anyone matching your description."
Lena's breath caught. "Why? How could they know?"
"Because three years ago, a traitor in my organization told Rossi that a woman dragged me out of that alley," Julian explained, his jaw tight. "Rossi knows that whoever kept me alive possesses the ultimate leverage. For three years, I kept my distance from that sector to draw their attention away. But the moment you stepped into Calloway’s, you triggered surveillance flags on both sides."
Lena covered her mouth with trembling hands. "They... they were watching me?"
"If you hadn't brought Nora into my office today, Rossi's men would have picked you up on your walk home," Julian said coldly. "And by midnight, Nora would have been in a cage."
Lena felt her knees buckle. The room seemed to tilt. Julian moved before she could hit the floor, his strong arms wrapping around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest.
She leaned into him despite herself, clutching the fabric of his sweater as terror washed through her in violent waves. He held her securely, his chin resting against the top of her damp hair, his heartbeat steady and strong against her cheek.
"I won't let them touch you," Julian murmured into her hair. "I swear it on my father's grave. You and Nora are under my aegis now. No one harms my blood."
Lena looked up, her tear-stained face inches from his. "Julian... that night. Three years ago. You said things to me. Fever dreams, I thought."
Julian’s gaze softened, his thumb coming up to trace her lower lip. "They weren't dreams, Lena. I remembered every touch. Every whisper. I remembered how your hands trembled while you stitched my flesh, and how you kissed my forehead when the fever broke. I didn't leave because I wanted to. I woke up at dawn, saw the blood on the floor, and realized my presence was a death sentence for you. I left to lead them away."
"You broke my heart," she whispered, the raw truth slipping past her defenses before she could stop it.

Julian's slate-gray eyes flashed with raw emotion. "Then let me spend the rest of my life putting it back together."
