Chapter 12 - The Reckoning at Home

Following the grand jury indictments, the collapse of my family’s world was swift and merciless.
Federal agents executed a search warrant on our Lakewood home that very afternoon. They seized Dad’s computers, his financial files, his luxury watch collection, and the keys to his imported sports car to satisfy emergency federal asset forfeiture liens.
Dad was formally arrested on Thursday morning, charged with tax evasion, money laundering, and operating an illegal offshore sports gambling book out of our basement.
Because he couldn't afford the five-hundred-thousand-dollar cash bond, he was transferred to the Denver County Detention Center, placed in the exact same facility where Ryan was being held.
Mom moved out of the house forty-eight hours before the bank foreclosed on the property. She packed two suitcases, checked into an extended-stay motel near the airport, and filed for immediate legal separation.
She called me once, on Friday evening.
I sat on the edge of the testing arena at Thorne Labs, listening to the phone ring three times before I pressed accept.
“Emily?” Mom’s voice was small, fragile, stripped of all the screaming hysteria from the days before.
“I’m here, Mom,” I said.
A long silence stretched between us. For thirty seconds, neither of us spoke. The only sound was the faint hum of cars driving past her motel window.
“The house is empty,” Mom whispered. “The bank changed the locks this morning. I… I’m staying near the airport. I took a job at a medical billing office starting next week.”
“Are you safe?” I asked, surprised to find that I genuinely cared about the answer.
“I’m safe,” Mom said, letting out a ragged breath. “For the first time in twenty-two years, your father isn't screaming at me about money. But Emily… I’m so sorry. I’m so, so sorry.”
Tears choked her voice, but this time, they weren't tears of blame. They were tears of profound, agonizing regret.
“I looked the other way,” Mom sobbed. “Every time David gave Ryan a pass, every time he ignored you, every time he took your earnings… I stayed quiet because I was terrified of being alone. I let them treat you like a stranger in your own house. And you were the only one who was actually honest.”
I looked across the lab floor, where ARIA 2.0 was running an autonomous pathfinding simulation through a maze of obstacles, her blue status light illuminating the clean floor.
“It hurt, Mom,” I said, a single tear slipping down my cheek and hitting my denim jeans. “It hurt every single day.”
“I know,” Mom whispered. “And I will spend the rest of my life wishing I had protected you. You don't have to forgive me, Emily. But please… don't let our hate make you cold. You have a brilliant, beautiful heart. Don't let what we did break it.”
“I won't, Mom,” I promised. “Take care of yourself.”
“Goodbye, my sweet girl.”
I ended the call, set the phone down on the metal bench, and wiped my eyes with the sleeve of my jacket.
The past was finally dead.
The family that had defined my life with conditional love and emotional blackmail was gone.
