Chapter 11 - Daniel's Secret

At 9:00 PM that night, while the online firestorm was still consuming Brooke’s social circle, my doorbell rang.

It wasn't a violent pounding this time. It was a single, hesitant chime.

I walked to the door, looked through the peephole, and saw Daniel standing alone in the hallway. He wasn't wearing his country club polo or his tailored suit. He wore a wrinkled gray hoodie, jeans, and a baseball cap pulled low over his eyes.

I unlocked the deadbolt and opened the door, keeping the safety chain engaged.

"Grace," he whispered, looking down the empty hallway like a fugitive. "Please. I’m alone. Brooke doesn't know I’m here."

"You shouldn't be here either, Daniel," I said through the crack. "You're violating the terms of our agreement."

"I have something you need to see," he said, pulling a manila folder from beneath his hoodie. "Something about Brooke and Elaine. Something they planned six months ago."

I paused. I studied his face through the gap. He looked terrified, hollowed out by adrenaline and exhaustion.

I closed the door, unlatched the heavy brass chain, and opened it wide.

"You have ten minutes," I said.

Daniel walked into the loft, barely taking in the high ceilings or the sweeping views of the Scioto River. He sat on the very edge of the sofa, his hands shaking as he placed the manila folder on the glass coffee table.

"Brooke is ruined," Daniel said, staring blankly at the floor. "Her friends won't return her calls. Her committee chairwoman told her she’s not welcome at the annual gala next month. My senior partner called me twenty minutes ago. He told me to take an indefinite leave of absence until the civil lawsuit is settled."

"Your wife brought this on herself, Daniel. She broke my cane and then launched a smear campaign against me online."

"I know," Daniel choked out. "I’m not defending her. Grace, I swear to God I didn't know about this until three days ago."

He pushed the manila folder toward me.

I opened it. Inside were copies of medical intake forms, power-of-attorney drafts, and email correspondence between Brooke and an elder-law attorney based in Dayton.

The subject line of the emails was: *Involuntary Conservatorship and Title Invalidation Strategy for Elaine Holloway.*

I read through the documents, my jaw tightening until my molars ground together.

Six months ago, Brooke had begun consulting with an attorney to have Elaine declared mentally incompetent due to mild age-related cognitive decline. Brooke’s plan wasn't just to inherit the house after Mom died; Brooke was planning to strip Elaine of her legal autonomy, seize legal control of Mom's estate while she was still alive, and force a sale of the Upper Arlington property to fund Daniel’s partnership buyout.

Brooke didn't know I owned the house. She thought Mom owned it. And she was preparing to throw our mother into a locked memory-care facility to get her hands on the deed.

"Where did you find this?" I asked, looking up.

"In Brooke’s desk drawer," Daniel whispered. "She had the notary forms ready. She was planning to have Elaine sign them on Mom’s seventy-fifth birthday next month, disguised as an update to her healthcare proxy."

I leaned back, a cold shiver running down my spine.

Brooke had stood on that patio, crying about our mother’s dignity, accusing me of elder abuse, while she had been actively drafting paperwork to lock Elaine away in a ward and steal the roof from over her head.

"Why are you giving this to me, Daniel?" I asked, watching him closely. "What’s your angle?"

Daniel looked up, his eyes glassy with tears. "I’m filing for divorce tomorrow, Grace. I can't be around her anymore. She’s sick. She’s going to drag me down to the bottom of the ocean with her. I’m giving you this because... because I want you to leave my firm out of the lawsuit. If you subpoena my accounts, I lose everything. Please."

I looked down at the documents, then at the trembling man across from me.

May you like

"Leave the folder on the table, Daniel," I said quietly. "And tell your divorce lawyer to move fast."
