Chapter 7 - The Cleanup

By late Monday afternoon, the frantic chaos of the courthouse had settled into a quiet, orderly reality.

My sister Paola sat across from me at my kitchen table, nursing a mug of black coffee while staring down at her hands. Her eyes were red-rimmed from crying, but for the first time in her life, she looked like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders.

“Mom is beside herself,” Paola whispered, her voice trembling. “Dad is being held at the county detention center awaiting arraignment bail hearings. Their lawyers say there’s no way out—the wire transfer paper trail is too clean, and Mercer, Hale & Grant have locked down every remaining account.”

I reached across the table and gently placed my hand over hers. “You did the right thing, Paola. It took courage to walk into that courtroom with those files.”

“I was terrified,” she admitted, a tear slipping down her cheek. “I spent my whole life being scared of Dad. Every decision I made, every holiday I hosted, every rule I followed... it was all to keep him from exploding. But watching him try to steal Renata’s future... I realized he would have done the exact same thing to Sofia and Emma if it suited him.”

“It’s over now,” I said softly. “We’re safe.”

Just then, the front door swung open, and Marcus Vance stepped into the apartment carrying a thick leather briefcase and a warm smile.

“Well, gentlemen and ladies,” Vance announced, tossing his overcoat onto the sofa. “The initial asset recovery phase is moving faster than anticipated. Federal receivers have seized the commercial properties, and the courts have issued a preliminary restitution order mandating the immediate return of the $200,000 principal, plus statutory interest and legal fees, directly into a newly fortified trust account for Miss Renata Whitmore.”

From the living room floor, where she was busy building a towering Lego castle, Renata looked up when she heard her name. “Is it my money back, Daddy?”

I smiled, walking over to kneel beside her and wiping a stray smudge of marker from her cheek. “Yes, baby girl. It’s all your money back. And nobody is ever going to take it away from you again.”

She beamed, wrapping her small arms around my neck and giving me a fierce, sticky hug. “Can we buy ice cream now?”

“We can buy the whole grocery store if you want,” I laughed, my heart feeling lighter than it had in four long years.
