Chapter 6 - The Campaign Launch

The ballroom of the Columbus Athletic Club was filled with brass fixtures, velvet drapes, and two hundred of the city's most influential business owners, donors, and press representatives.

Grant Bennett stood on the raised stage wearing a sharp navy suit, smiling beside Claire, who looked immaculate in a dark green lace cocktail dress. Margaret Bennett hovered near the front row, wearing a tailored cream blazer, holding court with local journalists.

Banner signs hung behind the stage: GRANT BENNETT FOR CITY COUNCIL — INTEGRITY, TRADITION, FAMILY.

I stood near the back of the room by the press tables, wearing a tailored charcoal pantsuit, carrying a dark leather briefcase.

Diane stood beside me. She had come as my guest.

At 7:30 PM, Grant took the microphone. "Thank you all for being here tonight," he began, his polished voice echoing through the sound system. "Our campaign is built on a simple promise: total transparency, fiscal responsibility, and upholding the values that make our community strong."

Margaret clapped proudly from the front row.

"Before we open the floor to questions from the press," Grant continued, "I want to thank my incredible wife, Claire, and my mother, Margaret, whose unwavering commitment to integrity inspires me every day."

A reporter from the Columbus Dispatch raised his hand in the front row. "Grant, quick question regarding your campaign's latest financial disclosure report filed this afternoon."

Grant smiled smoothly. "Of course, Mark. Our books are entirely open."

The reporter looked down at a tablet in his hands. "According to the state ethics board portal, a formal investigation was opened two hours ago regarding a twenty-five-thousand-dollar expenditure labeled 'Community Event Outreach' that was wired directly to Bennett Real Estate Holdings and subsequently transferred to a private estate wedding venue."

The room went dead silent.

Grant’s smile froze. He glanced frantically toward Margaret in the front row.

Margaret stood up immediately, her face flushing crimson. "That is a baseless, politically motivated rumor! Who filed that complaint?!"

The reporter looked toward the back of the ballroom, where two representatives from the State Campaign Ethics Commission were standing beside me.

"The complaint was filed by Lauren Miller, former managing partner of L&C Creative," the reporter announced, gesturing toward the back table. "Accompanied by certified bank audit trails showing campaign funds were used to settle personal venue debts for your son's wedding."

Cameras flashed instantly. Multiple journalists turned their lenses toward the back of the room.

Claire turned her head, her eyes locking onto mine across the crowded ballroom. She looked utterly shattered, her hand slipping away from Grant’s arm.

I didn't smile. I didn't cheer. I simply stood straight, holding my head high, as the state ethics officers stepped forward to deliver the official subpoena paperwork directly to Grant’s campaign manager.

Margaret tried to shout over the noise of the flashbulbs, but her voice was drowned out by the sudden flurry of questions from the press pool.

The narrative of "traditional family grace" had just dissolved under the harsh glare of public accountability.
