Chapter 4 - The Legal Hammer

My jaw dropped. "Judge Vance... you want to press criminal charges?"

"Call me Richard, Claire. You're my daughter-in-law now," he corrected gently, before his tone hardened like steel. "And absolute-ly yes. What happened today was not a 'family dispute.' It was a felony."

He flipped open his notepad, tapping a gold pen against the paper.

"She used a stolen key to enter a private residence without authorization—that is Breaking and Entering," Richard listed off with methodical precision. "She stole an item valued at over two thousand dollars—that is Grand Larceny. She threatened to release false, damaging statements unless Daniel complied with her demands—that is Felony Extortion. And she committed criminal destruction of private property by damaging your prom dress and stealing your gown."

I looked at Daniel. He nodded firmly. "I already spoke to the Commonwealth's Attorney this morning before the ceremony, Claire. The police report is being processed right now."

My mind raced. All my life, my mother had drilled one absolute rule into my head: You never involve outsiders. You never embarrass the family. You take whatever Vanessa does, and you swallow it.

"My mother is going to lose her mind," I whispered.

"Your mother enabled a predator," Richard said flatly. "If Evelyn wants to join her daughter as a co-conspirator for providing the stolen key to Daniel's apartment, my office will be more than happy to facilitate that indictment as well."

Before I could even process the weight of his words, the foyer doors clicked open.

My mother stepped into the hallway. She looked small, withered, and intensely anxious. The arrogance she usually wore like armor had completely dissolved. She crept toward us, clutching her beaded handbag like a shield.

"Claire..." Mom stammered, her voice shaking. "Claire, sweetie... can I speak to you for a moment? Alone?"

Daniel stepped directly between us, his massive frame completely blocking her view of me. "No, Evelyn. You can say whatever you have to say right here in front of my father and my wife."

Mom flinched at the word wife. She looked past Daniel's shoulder at me, her eyes brimming with frantic, manipulative tears.

"Claire, please," Mom begged. "You've had your moment. You had your big dramatic display in front of everyone. You made your point! But Vanessa is out in the parking lot in her car, hysterically crying. She's terrified! Two police officers are sitting in a cruiser near the exit!"

"As they should be," Richard said coldly, stepping beside Daniel.

"Richard, please!" Mom cried out, turning to Daniel's father. "She's just a young woman who made a foolish mistake! She was jealous! She has emotional issues! You know how unstable she gets when she feels neglected!"

"She is twenty-eight years old, Evelyn," I said, stepping out from behind Daniel to face my mother directly. "She is not a child. She is an adult who committed multiple crimes because she couldn't stand seeing me happy for one single day."

"She’s your sister!" Mom shrieked, falling back on her lifelong mantra. "Family forgives! If you press charges, she could go to jail! She could have a criminal record! It will ruin her life!"

"She ruined her own life the moment she walked into Daniel's apartment," I replied, my voice steady, devoid of the trembling fear I used to feel whenever Mom raised her voice. "And for twenty-six years, you helped her do it. Every time she stole my things, every time she ruined my birthdays, every time she lied about me—you covered for her. You told me to be quiet so she wouldn't have a meltdown."

"I was trying to keep our family together!" Mom sobbed.

"No, Mom," I said, looking her straight in the eyes. "You were protecting a bully because it was easier than holding her accountable. But I am done taking the hits for her."

Richard stepped forward, pulling a formal legal business card from his pocket and thrusting it into my mother's hands.

"Evelyn," Richard said in a voice that commanded immediate silence. "If your daughter is still on the premises in fifteen minutes, the arresting officers will execute the warrant right here in the hotel driveway. I suggest you tell her to drive directly to the Third Precinct to turn herself in. It will look better for her bail hearing tomorrow morning."

Mom stared at the gold-embossed legal card as if it were a poisonous viper. She looked at Richard, then at Daniel, and finally at me.

She saw zero weakness. Zero hesitation. Zero room for negotiation.

Realizing that her authority was completely dead, my mother let out a strangled sob, turned around, and hurried out the glass doors toward the parking lot to save her golden child from immediate arrest.

I stood in the quiet foyer, leaning against Daniel's side.

"You okay?" Daniel asked softly, kissing the top of my head.

"I feel like I just took off a pair of heavy lead boots I've been wearing since I was five years old," I admitted, a genuine smile breaking across my face.

Sarah sprinted over from the ballroom doors, holding two giant glasses of red wine.

"Alright, people!" Sarah announced with a fierce grin. "The DJ is playing 90s hip-hop, the open bar is officially active, and one hundred and fifty people are waiting to celebrate the absolute coolest bride in Virginia history! Are we going to party or what?!"

Daniel looked at my pinned-together navy dress, laughed out loud, and grabbed my hand.

"Let's go party," Daniel said.
