Chapter 8 - The Quiet Current Unleashed

"Wait for my strike team," Alexander whispered, his hand on my arm as we crouched behind a stack of rusted steel beams outside the warehouse perimeter. "Marcus has forty men arriving in five minutes."

"Mateo doesn't have five minutes," I whispered back, pointing toward the warehouse.

Victoria Lane was standing in front of my brother, holding his emergency inhaler between her thumb and forefinger. She laughed, dropping it onto the wet concrete and crushing it beneath her high-heeled boot.

Mateo slumped forward, his small chest convulsing violently as he starved for air.

Something inside me snapped.

"Cover me," I said.

Before Alexander could object, I slipped into the shadows like an apparition.

The rain masked the sound of my footsteps. Two perimeter guards stood near the side entrance of the warehouse, their rifles slung over their shoulders as they smoked beneath a corrugated tin awning.

I closed the distance in absolute silence.

I drew both rattan sticks from my back. With a twin strike faster than a heartbeat, the smooth wood caught the first guard behind the ear and the second across the throat. Both men collapsed into the mud without uttering a single groan.

I stepped through the side door into the cavernous warehouse.

There were fourteen men scattered across the concrete floor, surrounding Victor Lane, Victoria, and the traitor Paulie Russo.

"Where is Ashford?!" Victor barked into his phone. "He should have been here by now! Check the perimeter!"

"He's not here," I spoke aloud, my voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls.

Every head snapped in my direction.

Fourteen rifles raised simultaneously.

Victoria sneered, stepping behind her father. "Look who decided to show up! The maid! Where's your boyfriend, Sophia? Did he leave you to die alone?"

"Let my brother go," I said, walking slowly toward them, my rattan sticks held casually at my sides. "And I might let you live."

Victor Lane burst into roaring laughter. "You arrogant little street rat! Kill her!"

Three mercenaries rushed forward, firing their weapons.

The Quiet Current was born from the ancient islanders who fought armored conquistadors using nothing but bamboo and motion. It does not resist force; it drowns it.

As the first burst of bullets flew, I was already moving. I dropped low, sliding across the slick concrete, closing the twenty-foot gap before the shooters could adjust their aim downward.

I sprang upward inside their guard.

*Crack!*

My right stick shattered the first man's wrist, sending his weapon flying. My left stick drove into his solar plexus, doubling him over. Using his falling body as a springboard, I leaped over him, spinning mid-air.

Both sticks struck the second shooter’s temples in a synchronized cross-strike. He collapsed like a puppet with cut strings.

The third man pulled a combat knife, slashing violently at my throat.

I didn't step back. I stepped *into* the attack.

My forearm deflected his wrist outward, turning his own blade away. I wrapped my arm around his elbow, applying instantaneous leverage.

*Snap.*

He screamed as his joint inverted. I grabbed his tactical vest and threw him violently across the concrete, crashing directly into two other approaching guards.

Gunfire erupted from the catwalks above.

Suddenly, the warehouse skylight shattered in an explosion of glass.

Alexander descended on a tactical zip-line, firing his submachine gun with lethal accuracy. The shooters on the catwalks plummeted to the floor, eliminated in seconds. Marcus and the Ashford strike team breached the main bay doors, surrounding Lane’s remaining men in a ring of overwhelming firepower.

"Drop your weapons!" Marcus roared.

The remaining mercenaries looked at the pile of broken bodies I had left in my wake, looked at Alexander's heavy artillery, and tossed their rifles onto the ground, raising their hands.

I didn't care about the victory. I sprinted toward Mateo.

"Mateo! Look at me, buddy!" I dropped my weapons, falling to my knees and pulling my brother against my chest. His lips were blue, his pulse erratic. "Stay with me, Mateo! Breathe!"

"Sophia..." Victoria screamed, lunging from behind a shipping crate with a snub-nosed revolver aimed at the back of my head. "You ruined my life! You took everything from me!"

A single gunshot cracked through the warehouse.

Victoria dropped the gun, clutching her shoulder as she collapsed to the floor, wailing in pain.

Alexander stood ten feet away, his smoking weapon lowered. He walked past her without even glancing down, knelt beside me, and pulled an emergency pediatric adrenaline autoinjector from his medical pouch.

"Hold him," Alexander commanded gently.

He plunged the injector into Mateo’s thigh.

Ten terrifying seconds passed.

Then, Mateo let out a massive, ragged gasp of air. His eyes fluttered open, the color slowly returning to his small face.

"Sophia...?" Mateo wheezed softly.

May you like

Tears streamed down my cheeks, washing away the rain and grime. I buried my face in his neck, sobbing with a relief so intense it shook my entire soul. "I've got you, baby. I've got you. You're safe."
