Chapter 6 - The Descent of Mark Callahan

By noon, the empire Mark Callahan had spent a decade building crumbled into dust.
While the emergency board meeting was still concluding on the forty-second floor, the corporate IT security team—acting on the encrypted files from Emma’s USB drive—remotely locked Mark out of every single company server, email account, and encrypted cloud storage vault. His corporate credit cards were instantly deactivated, his secure parking garage pass was revoked, and his digital office badge was rendered invalid.
I rode the private executive elevator back down to the ground floor lobby, flanked by two corporate security guards. As the elevator doors slid open, I saw him.
Mark was standing near the security turnstiles, red-faced, shouting furiously at the building receptionist while three security guards blocked his path. His expensive Italian suit looked like it had been slept in, his tie was crooked, and his hair was wildly disheveled. He looked desperate, pathetic, and utterly broken.
“I am the senior vice president of this firm!” Mark screamed, slamming his fist against the marble reception desk. “You can’t lock me out! Call Arthur Vance right now! This is a mistake!”
“Mr. Callahan, your badge has been permanently deactivated,” the head security guard said coldly, stepping closer. “You are no longer an employee of Callahan & Vance Securities. If you do not leave the premises immediately, we will have local police arrest you for trespassing.”
“Trespassing? In my own building?” Mark laughed hysterically, his voice cracking with sheer panic. He spun around, and that was when he saw me stepping out of the private elevator, flanked by two corporate guards and carrying a sleek leather briefcase containing his signed termination papers.
His eyes went wide, bulging with sheer disbelief. He pushed past the lobby guards, stumbling forward until he was just a few feet away from me.
“Claire,” he breathed, his voice dropping to a desperate, trembling whisper. “Thank God. Tell these idiots there’s been a misunderstanding. You know how hard I’ve worked for this company. You wouldn't do this to me... we’re married.”
I stopped, looking down at him with an expression of cold, clinical detachment. The man who had humiliated me in front of a hundred guests at his mother’s birthday party, who had threatened to throw me onto the streets with a sick child, now stood before me begging for mercy.
“We were married, Mark,” I corrected him softly, pulling a thick envelope out of my briefcase and holding it out. “Past tense. As of twelve minutes ago, the board voted unanimously to strip you of your title, freeze your personal assets, and transfer your entire equity stake to my name as part of emergency spousal recovery.”
Mark staggered backward as if he had been physically struck in the chest. His mouth opened and closed, but no words came out.
“You... you what?” he whispered, his face turning an alarming shade of purple. “You stole my company? That’s *my* stock! That’s *my* life’s work!”
“Your life’s work?” I let out a cold, humorless laugh. “Mark, for the last five years, every major corporate merger you signed your name to was negotiated by me while you were playing golf or entertaining Vanessa at country clubs. You were a figurehead with a nice smile and an expensive tailor. Nothing more.”
“You lying bitch!” Mark roared, losing all control. He lunged forward, his hands clawing at the air, attempting to grab me by the shoulders.
He didn't even take two steps.
Before Mark’s fingers could graze my Prada suit, the two corporate security guards tackled him to the marble floor with bone-crunching force. One guard pinned Mark’s face against the polished stone, twisting his arm behind his back with ruthless efficiency, while the other secured plastic zip-ties around his wrists.
“Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am?!” Mark shrieked into the floor, spitting blood as his cheek scraped the marble.
“We know exactly who you are, Mr. Callahan,” a calm, booming voice echoed from the entrance of the lobby.
Two federal agents from the FBI’s white-collar crime division stepped through the revolving glass doors, flashing gold badges. Behind them stood Arthur Vance, holding a thick folder stamped with federal investigation seals.
“Mark Callahan,” the lead agent said, stepping over Mark’s writhing body and snapping a pair of cold steel handcuffs onto his wrists. “You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and international money laundering.”
Mark went completely limp, his eyes staring blankly at the polished marble floor as the agents hoisted him to his feet. As they dragged him toward the revolving doors past a crowd of gaping onlookers and paparazzi, Mark caught my eye one last time.

There was no arrogance left in his gaze. Only pure, unadulterated terror.
