Chapter 12 - The Fallout and the Audit

The fallout from the golden anniversary gala was swift, brutal, and broadcast across every major digital gossip platform and financial news outlet within forty-eight hours. By Monday morning, the hashtag #HarrisonFamilyScandal was trending nationwide. Social media sleuths, armed with screenshots of the security metadata and leaked family office memos, tore Chelsea’s carefully curated Instagram life to shreds. Her sponsorships dropped her overnight, her country club membership was quietly suspended, and Richard filed for a divorce so fast his legal team left skid marks on the courthouse steps.

David and I, however, found ourselves in an entirely different kind of storm.

We were sitting in the ultra-modern, glass-walled conference room of Harrison Enterprises, located on the forty-fifth floor of downtown's most prestigious skyscraper. The room offered a breathtaking panoramic view of the city skyline, but neither of us was looking at the view. Across the gleaming mahogany table sat Marcus Vance, the firm’s legendary chief legal counsel—a man whose retainer alone could buy a luxury sedan, and whose shark-like reputation kept hostile takeovers at bay.

Marcus slid a thick manila folder across the table toward us. His expression was unreadable, a mask of calculated professional detachment.

"The board has reviewed the digital forensic reports and the PTA logs," Marcus began, his voice deep and measured. "Your grandmother’s directive is absolute. She wants a complete corporate and legal restructuring of the family trust, and she wants you, David, to step into the executive vice president seat that was originally designated for your uncle Richard."

David stared at the folder, his hands resting flat on the table. He didn't reach for it immediately. "And the legal liabilities left behind by Chelsea and Richard?"

"Being systematically dismantled and buried under six feet of non-disclosure agreements and forensic accounting," Marcus replied smoothly. "They won't be able to sue, and they won't be able to borrow another dime against the family name. But that’s not why I asked you both here today."

I leaned forward, narrowing my eyes. "Go on, Marcus. What else is there?"

Marcus opened a secondary folder, pulling out a single sheet of paper covered in complex corporate structures and offshore shell companies. "When we were auditing Chelsea’s accounts to freeze her assets, we found something unexpected. She didn't act alone when she hacked the school security system and paid off the academy administrator to frame your son, Leo."

My heart skipped a beat. A cold wave of adrenaline rushed through my veins. "What are you talking about? Who helped her?"

"Someone inside this very building," Marcus said quietly, turning the paper so we could read the name at the bottom of the wire transfer authorization.

My breath caught in my throat as I read the name. It wasn't just a family betrayal anymore; it was an active corporate sabotage plot that reached straight into the heart of the Harrison empire.
