Chapter 4 - Chloe’s Desperate Play

The holding cells beneath the Alexandria Federal Detention Center were devoid of velvet, crystal, or polite society smiles. The walls were constructed of poured, unpainted concrete that smelled persistently of industrial bleach and damp steel.

Chloe sat curled on a stainless steel bench, her ruined silk gown bunched up around her knees. Her mascara had run in dark, grotesque streaks down her cheeks, and her hands shook violently as she stared at the floor.

Across the narrow corridor, separated by reinforced security glass and heavy iron bars, Eleanor paced the length of her cell like a caged hyena. Her makeup was smeared, her posture stiff with outrage that refused to die.

"It’s an intimidation tactic, Chloe," Eleanor insisted through gritted teeth, gripping the bars until her knuckles turned white. "That’s all this is. Marcus Vance thinks he can bully us. Natalie thinks she can scare us into silence. Tomorrow morning, when our attorney files the emergency writ, we will walk out of here, and I will sue the Department of Defense, the St. Regis, and Ethan Vance’s entire family for millions."

"Mom, shut up!" Chloe suddenly screamed, covering her ears. "Just shut up! Didn't you hear what that marshal said? They know about the IP addresses! They know about the Cayman account!"

Eleanor rolled her eyes dismissively. "Darling, everyone uses creative accounting. It’s a white-collar misunderstanding. We have General Carter’s name. His legacy protects us. No judge in this state would dare send a four-star general's widow and daughter to prison."

The heavy security door at the end of the corridor buzzed loudly and clicked open.

Footsteps echoed along the concrete floor. Crisp. Measured. Rhythmic.

Chloe snapped her head up, her eyes wide with desperate hope. "Natalie? Is that Natalie? Did she come to drop the charges?"

It wasn't Natalie.

Two men stepped into the corridor. The first was Special Agent Miller of the Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS). The second was a tall, sharply dressed civilian attorney with silver hair and an alligator-leather briefcase: Arthur Sterling, the Carter family’s long-time estate lawyer.

"Arthur!" Eleanor gasped, pressing her face against the bars. "Thank God you’re here! Get the warden down here immediately. I demand to be released on personal recognizance. Look at these conditions! It’s barbaric!"

Arthur Sterling stopped in the center of the corridor. He didn't smile. He didn't open his briefcase to produce bail paperwork. He simply looked at Eleanor through rimless spectacles with cold, professional detachment.

"I am not here to represent you, Eleanor," Arthur said, his voice flat and formal.

Eleanor blinked, stunned. "What are you talking about? You are on a monthly retainer for the Carter estate! I pay your bills!"

"Correction," Arthur replied smoothly, pulling a crisp document from his folder. "The Carter Estate pays my bills. And as of eighteen hundred hours this evening, following your physical assault on the primary executor and beneficiary of the estate, Major Natalie Carter exercised her legal authority under General Thomas Carter’s military trust agreement."

Chloe scrambled off her bench, pressing her face against the mesh of her cell door. "Arthur! What does that mean? Where is our money?"

"There is no 'our money,' Chloe," Arthur stated coldly. "Every single asset—the house in Great Falls, the offshore holdings, the family vehicles, the trust fund, and the surviving dependent stipend—is legally tied to the General’s primary military executor. For the last six years, Major Carter graciously allowed Eleanor to manage the household funds on the assumption that she was acting in good faith."

Arthur turned slightly, motioning to Special Agent Miller.

"However," Miller took over, pulling out a thick manila folder, "our preliminary audit this evening uncovered something far worse than unauthorized DFAS access."

Eleanor’s face drained of what little color remained. "What audit?"

Miller opened the folder. "Three years ago, you took out a second mortgage on the Great Falls estate by forging Natalie Carter’s signature as a co-signatory. You liquidated her father's private collection of service memorabilia, including his ceremonial dress swords and personal combat logs, selling them to private collectors in Europe for eight hundred thousand dollars."

"I owned those!" Eleanor shrieked. "I was his wife!"

"They were deeded explicitly to the National Infantry Museum under the General's will, with Natalie as custodian," Miller countered without missing a beat. "Furthermore, Miss Chloe Carter, we received a formal notification an hour ago from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. It appears your boutique didn't go bankrupt due to bad luck. You used the business to launder high-interest loans from an illicit bookmaking ring operating out of Baltimore."

Chloe let out a pathetic whimper, backing away from the bars until her spine hit the concrete wall. She slid down to the floor, pulling her knees to her chest.

"Two million dollars, Chloe," Miller continued, his voice relentless. "You owe two million dollars to violent loan sharks who have been tracking your mother’s attempts to seize Natalie’s survivor benefits. They were waiting for that wire transfer on Monday."

"Arthur, help me!" Chloe wept, tears washing away the last remnants of her arrogance. "Please! They’re going to kill me! Tell Natalie she has to give them the money! She’s my sister! She can't let them kill me!"

Arthur Sterling closed his briefcase with a sharp, definitive click.

"Major Carter gave specific instructions regarding your situation, Chloe," Arthur said quietly.

Eleanor leaned forward, her voice trembling with sudden, desperate urgency. "What instructions? Tell us!"

"Major Carter stated that choices have consequences," Arthur said, staring Eleanor dead in the eye. "She has officially turned over all forged documents, bank records, and digital evidence to the United States Attorney's Office. She will not be paying your debts. She will not be posting your bail. And she will not be visiting you."

"She can't do this!" Eleanor screamed, rattling the iron bars with frantic, clawing fingers. "I am her mother! I gave her life! Natalie! You ungrateful bitch! NATALIE!"

May you like

Arthur turned on his heel and walked out of the corridor, his footsteps fading into the cold, concrete distance, leaving only the sound of Chloe’s terrified sobs and Eleanor’s hysterical screams echoing against the steel.
