Chapter 8 - Creditors at the Gates

While Eleanor was unraveling in the federal interrogation room, the fallout of Chloe’s reckless lifestyle was arriving at the wrought-iron gates of the Great Falls estate.
The heavy black iron gates were locked, monitored by high-definition military-grade perimeter cameras installed twenty-four hours earlier by the Defense Information Systems Agency.
Outside the gate, two black Cadillac Escalades with heavily tinted windows and Maryland dealer plates idled on the quiet residential cul-de-sac.
Three men stepped out of the lead SUV. They wore heavy leather jackets over expensive tracksuits, their expressions hard, watchful, and thoroughly unimpressed by the quiet wealth of Fairfax County. These were not white-collar embezzlers; these were enforcers from the Baltimore loan-sharking syndicate that Chloe had stupidly borrowed two million dollars from to finance her private jet trips to Miami and her high-stakes illegal baccarat habit.
The leader of the group, a stocky man with a scar running through his left eyebrow named Vince Moretti, walked up to the gate intercom and pressed the button aggressively.
"Chloe," Moretti’s raspy voice crackled through the speaker. "We know you’re in there. Your mother's phone is off, and our wire transfer didn't clear this morning. You owe us two million two hundred thousand as of noon today. Pop the gate, or we come over the wall and take the art off your walls."
Inside the estate's guardhouse, sitting in front of six high-definition surveillance monitors, was not a terrified twenty-six-year-old socialite.
It was Colonel Ethan Vance and four armed operators from the 75th Ranger Regiment’s civilian security detachment, all dressed in discreet tactical black, their sidearms holstered but readily accessible.
Ethan depressed the talk button on the console.
"Vehicle operators at the gate," Ethan’s voice was smooth, terrifyingly calm. "You are trespassing on property currently under federal seizure by the United States Marshals Service. Disperse immediately."
Moretti laughed, a harsh, grating sound through the speaker. "Oh, that’s cute! Chloe got herself a new security boyfriend! Listen to me, tough guy. We don't give a damn about Chloe’s fake marshals. Tell that spoiled little princess to bring the cashier's checks to the gate right now, or we burn that front door down."
Moretti reached into his leather jacket, deliberately flashing the butt of a nickel-plated semi-automatic pistol tucked into his waistband, signaling to the two men behind him to retrieve crowbars from the trunk.
Ethan looked at the squad leader sitting next to him, Master Sergeant Keller.
"Execute perimeter breach protocol," Ethan said quietly.
"Yes, Sir."
Outside the gate, Moretti’s men had barely retrieved their tools when the heavy wrought-iron gate suddenly swung open on its motorized track.
Moretti smirked, turning to his crew. "See? I told you. Flash a little steel and these rich suburbanites fold like wet paper."
The three men strode confidently past the gate line, stepping onto the private asphalt driveway.
They made it exactly ten feet.
From the dense rhododendron bushes flanking the driveway, four tactical operators stepped out in absolute, terrifying unison. Laser designators from suppressed rifles instantly painted bright green dots directly onto Moretti’s chest, forehead, and throat.
"FEDERAL OFFICERS! WEAPONS ON THE GROUND! DOWN ON YOUR FACES! NOW!"
The sheer volume of the command hit them like a physical shockwave.
The two enforcers behind Moretti instantly dropped their crowbars, their hands shooting into the air, their knees buckling under the sheer instinct of survival. These were street criminals; they knew the difference between rent-a-cops and Tier-One military operators who wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger.
Moretti froze, his hand still hovering near his jacket lapel. "Whoa, whoa! Wait! Hold your fire! We’re just collecting a debt!"
Ethan stepped out from behind the stone pillar of the guardhouse, dressed in his crisp service uniform, walking slowly toward Moretti with hands clasped behind his back.
"Mr. Moretti," Ethan said, his voice quiet, almost conversational. "You are currently standing on federal property, brandishing an unregistered firearm in the presence of active-duty military personnel, while attempting to execute an extortion racket against a federally protected witness."
Moretti swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically between the green laser dots trembling on his leather jacket. "Protected witness? Chloe Carter is a deadbeat junkie who owes two million to—"
"Chloe Carter is currently in federal custody facing twenty counts of wire fraud," Ethan interrupted smoothly. "And as of twelve minutes ago, pursuant to the cooperation agreement being negotiated by her public defender, Miss Carter has officially named you, your associates, and your Baltimore sports-betting enterprise as the primary recipients of her laundered charity funds."
Moretti’s face drained of color. "She... she did what?"
"She rolled on you, Mr. Moretti," Ethan said with a faint, chilling smile. "To save herself five years on her sentencing guidelines, your favorite client handed the FBI your offshore account numbers, your collection burner phones, and the address of your warehouse in Dundalk."
Sirens suddenly wailed in the distance, echoing down the quiet country road.
Within ninety seconds, four Fairfax County police cruisers and two unmarked FBI sedans screeched into the cul-de-sac, their lights flashing furiously.
"Drop to your knees, Mr. Moretti," Ethan instructed softly. "Before my men decide you're resisting."
Moretti slowly raised his hands, his knees hitting the cold asphalt. He looked up at Ethan, his expression a mixture of profound shock and disgust. "That spoiled little bitch... she destroyed herself, and she took us down with her."

"That's the Carter family specialty," Ethan replied, turning on his heel as the FBI agents swarmed the driveway to slap steel handcuffs onto the stunned enforcers. "They consume everything they touch. But today, the tab finally came due."
