Chapter 6 - Unearthing the Vault

While I was being treated at the hospital—where my broken collarbone was finally properly set and cast—state investigators and forensic accountants descended upon the Sterling estate like a swarm of locusts.

By afternoon, local news vans crowded the outer perimeter of Blackwood Ridge, broadcasting live updates to the entire state of Nebraska. Headlines scrolled across cable news networks: Car Accident or Calculated Murder? Dark Secrets Uncovered at Ashford Estate.

Detective Vance visited my hospital room late that evening, carrying a thick cardboard box filled with documents recovered from Marcus's private wall safe.

"We found what we were looking for, Elena," Vance said gently, pulling up a chair beside my bed. He set the box on the nightstand. "The physical paper trail. Not only did Marcus and Eleanor systematically forge medical waivers and power-of-attorney documents for Clara and Sarah, but they had already drawn up fraudulent institutionalization papers for you, dated for next Tuesday."

I shuddered, pulling the hospital blanket tighter around my good arm. "They were going to lock me away just like the others?"

"In a private psychiatric facility funded by Carver Diagnostics and shell corporations," Vance nodded grimly. "They had doctors on retainer who signed off on whatever Eleanor told them to write. Clara's family thought she had vanished abroad. Sarah's parents were told she suffered permanent brain damage and couldn't recognize them. The Sterlings were untouchable because they controlled the narrative from every angle."

"And the timber trust?" I asked.

"Recovered and frozen by a federal judge," Vance smiled faintly. "Your son's inheritance is secure. And more importantly, the medical examiner who signed off on Sarah's autopsy was picked up by state police three hours ago at a regional airport trying to board a flight to Mexico. He's already singing like a canary."

A profound wave of relief washed over me. The nightmare wasn't entirely over—the upcoming trials would be long, painful, and emotionally draining—but the shadow hanging over my son's future had been lifted.
