Chapter 6 - The Broken Sister

Gunfire erupted in the tiled corridor outside the vault.
Ethan scrambled across the floor, shielding Chloe’s body with his own as concrete dust rained down from the ceiling. I dropped from the table, landing hard on the marble floor, my knees taking the brunt of the impact.
Beatrice shrieked as a round clipped her shoulder, sending her spinning against the heavy doorframe. The pistol clattered from her grip, skidding across the polished floor straight to my feet. Behind her, three men in tactical vests bearing real FBI insignia stormed the entrance, tackling Beatrice to the ground before she could recover.
"Clear! Subject is secured!" an agent barked, pinning Beatrice's face into the floor while another officer handcuffed her wrists with heavy steel zipties.
A tall woman in an impeccably pressed navy suit stepped into the vault, her gold federal badge gleaming under the emergency strobes. "Sarah Vance? I’m Special Agent Miller, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Financial Crimes and Racketeering Division. Are you all right?"
I sat there, gasping for fresh air, my hand bleeding, staring at the woman in shock. "How... how did you find us?"
"Ethan’s father didn't just hire private security," Agent Miller explained, holstering her weapon. "He contacted the Deputy Director of the FBI two days ago. Vance Technologies has been under federal surveillance for six months regarding international money laundering. When your mother’s lawyer filed that fraudulent injunction at the hospital, it triggered an immediate red flag on our wiretaps. We’ve been tailing Beatrice since she broke out of the private clinic two hours ago."
On the floor, Beatrice was sobbing uncontrollably. The manic rage that had possessed her at the altar had completely shattered, replaced by the hollow, broken despair of a cornered animal.
"She told me to do it," Beatrice wept, blood seeping through her torn blouse. "She said if I didn't get the key back, she would tell the police that I was the one who cut David's brakes! She made me do it, Sarah! She’s been blackmailing me for twenty years!"
I slowly stood up, walking toward my younger sister. The anger inside me didn't dissipate, but it transformed into something colder, heavier, and far more lethal.
"You helped her murder my husband, Beatrice," I said, my voice dead and emotionless. "You attacked Chloe. You tried to slaughter your own niece."
"I was twenty-two!" Beatrice wailed, lifting her tear-streaked face from the floor. "Eleanor told me David was going to send our father to prison! She told me David was stealing from us! I didn't know she was going to cut the brake lines until it was already done! And once David was dead, Eleanor had me sign the false mechanic's testimony. She told me that if I ever crossed her, she would hand that signed confession to the district attorney and let me take the fall for first-degree murder!"
Agent Miller knelt beside Beatrice, pulling a digital recorder from her coat pocket. "Beatrice Vance, are you stating on the record that Eleanor Vance orchestrated the homicide of David Vance and compelled your compliance through coercion and extortion?"
"Yes! Yes, God, yes!" Beatrice screamed, her voice cracking in agony. "She kept the physical mechanic’s signed affidavit in the wall safe behind the portrait of our father in the grand study! She has copies of the offshore wire transfers she used to pay the mechanic fifty thousand dollars to drain the brake fluid! She keeps everything! Eleanor never throws away leverage!"
Ethan stood up, his arm wrapped tightly around Chloe, who was trembling but conscious. "The encrypted drive, Agent Miller. We have David's ledger. We have the complete forensic financial records."
Agent Miller took the titanium drive from the inspection table and sealed it in an evidence bag. "With this ledger and Beatrice's direct sworn testimony, Eleanor Vance won't just face federal racketeering charges. She’s facing aggravated murder and capital conspiracy."
"It’s not enough," I said, stepping between the agents and the door.
Agent Miller frowned. "Mrs. Vance, we have more than enough to secure an arrest warrant."
"You don't understand who my mother is," I replied, my voice steady, ice running through my veins. "Eleanor has a private jet fueled on the tarmac at Westchester Airport right now. Sterling has judges on retainer. If you roll up to her estate with sirens blaring, she will burn that house to the ground along with the physical evidence in that safe, board her jet, and be in a non-extradition country before you can process the paperwork."
Chloe looked at me, her swollen eyes widening. "Mom... what are you thinking?"
"She thinks she won," I said, turning to look at my daughter and the man who loved her enough to risk his life for her truth. "She thinks we are dead inside this vault. She is hosting the Vance Technologies Twentieth Anniversary Gala tonight at the Plaza Hotel. The entire city elite will be there. She’s going to announce the final sale of David’s company."
I looked directly into Agent Miller's eyes.

"Don't arrest her in the dark," I said. "Let me walk into that ballroom. Let me show the world who Eleanor Vance really is."
