Chapter 8 - The Velvet Guillotine

The silence in the grand ballroom was absolute. You could hear the faint fizzing of champagne bubbles in the glasses of frozen waiters.

Richard Sterling moved instantly, gesturing wildly to the four private security guards flanking the stage. "Remove them! They are trespassing! Call the police immediately!"

"The police are already here, Richard," Ethan announced, stepping forward and pointing toward the back of the room.

A dozen federal agents, led by Agent Miller, flanked every exit of the ballroom, their hands resting deliberately near their holstered sidearms. The guests began to murmur in rising panic, several prominent politicians quietly slipping out of their seats and backing away toward the perimeter.

Eleanor stood behind the podium, her mask finally slipping. Her mouth twitched, her eyes bulging with a mixture of shock, terror, and rabid fury.

"Sarah," Eleanor hissed, leaning into the live microphone, her voice carrying across the entire room. "You have lost your mind. How dare you bring this cheap, disgraceful circus to my company’s celebration! Get out of here before I have you committed to an asylum!"

"This isn't your company, Mother," I said, walking slowly up the stage steps. Each step felt like shedding twenty years of grief, shame, and poverty. "It never was."

"Ladies and gentlemen," Chloe spoke up, her voice ringing clear, youthful, and completely fearless. She turned to face the five hundred guests and the live press cameras broadcasting the gala to financial networks worldwide. "Twenty years ago, my father, David Vance, died on Highway 101. For two decades, Eleanor Vance told the world he was a bankrupt failure. But tonight, the United States Department of Justice unsealed his master ledger."

Behind Eleanor, the massive projection screen that had been displaying the Vance Technologies corporate logo suddenly flickered.

The screen cut to black, and then illuminated with high-resolution scans of wire transfers, canceled offshore checks, and the mechanical sabotage report from the state police archives.

A sharp gasp echoed through the crowd as a video recording began to play over the massive sound system.

It was Beatrice.

She was sitting in an FBI interrogation room, her face swollen, her shoulder bandaged, speaking directly into the camera between ragged sobs.

*'My mother, Eleanor Vance, hired a mechanic named Marcus Kane in October 2004,'* Beatrice's recorded voice boomed through the speakers. *'She paid him fifty thousand dollars from account ending in 4102 to cut the hydraulic brake lines on David's sedan. When David discovered the company fraud, Eleanor told me that David had to die to protect our social standing. She orchestrated the crash. She orchestrated the cover-up. And today, she ordered me to murder Chloe at the altar to steal the physical key to David's safe deposit box.'*

"Turn it off!" Eleanor screamed, slamming her fists onto the podium. She turned to Sterling, her face purple with uncontrolled rage. "Richard, kill the power! Cut the feed! Cut it now!"

"I can't, Eleanor," Sterling stammered, his face pale as chalk. He slowly raised his hands and stepped away from her, putting three feet of empty space between them. "The system has been overridden remotely by federal warrant. It's out of my hands."

Eleanor whirled around to face me as I reached the top of the dais. Her polished, aristocratic facade was completely gone, replaced by the snarling, vicious monster that had hidden beneath the velvet and diamonds for seventy years.

"You ungrateful little wretch!" Eleanor screamed, lunging at me with her manicured hands hooked into claws. "I gave you life! I built this empire while you cried over that pathetic boy! Everything I did was to keep our name powerful! You are nothing! You have always been nothing!"

She lunged forward, aiming straight for my throat.

Twenty years ago, I would have cowered. Ten years ago, I would have cried.

Tonight, I didn't move an inch.

As Eleanor reached me, I caught both of her wrists in a vice-like grip. I leaned in, our faces separated by inches, and looked straight into the cold, dead eyes of the woman who had birthed me and destroyed my life.

"You didn't give me life, Eleanor," I whispered, loud enough for the microphone on the podium to catch every single word. "You gave me grief. But today... I am taking back my family."

I shoved her backward. Eleanor stumbled over the train of her four-thousand-dollar dress, collapsing hard onto the velvet-draped stage floor, her sapphire necklace tearing free and scattering blue stones across the polished wood.

Agent Miller and four federal officers strode up the stage steps.

"Eleanor Vance," Agent Miller announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt. "You are under arrest for first-degree murder, federal racketeering, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit capital homicide. You have the right to remain silent."

May you like

As the cold steel snapped around my mother’s wrists, the entire ballroom erupted into absolute pandemonium. Flashbulbs went off in blinding waves, capturing Eleanor Vance being dragged across her own stage in chains, screaming curses that would headline every newspaper in the free world by dawn.
