Chapter 6 - The Hamptons Knock

The salt air off the Atlantic was cold and sharp, carrying the scent of damp pine and high tide.

At the end of a private, gated lane in Southampton, the Sterling summer estate sat behind eight-foot wrought-iron fences like a fortress of quiet, inherited wealth. Manicured hedges lined the winding gravel driveway, leading up to a sprawling shingle-style mansion with copper gutters and panoramic ocean views.

Inside, Chloe was humming.

She stood in the master dressing room, surrounded by open Louis Vuitton luggage. She folded a silk resort dress with practiced ease, her mind entirely consumed by the upcoming ten days in the Indian Ocean. The drama of the previous night had already been neatly categorized in her mind as a minor inconvenience, an unfortunate bump that she had successfully smoothed over with a well-timed Instagram post.

Downstairs, Julian stood in the kitchen, pouring black coffee into a porcelain mug. His hands were not steady.

Unlike Chloe, Julian had not slept. He had spent the early morning hours fielding frantic calls from his father, who had been woken up by the country club's board of directors. The board was furious about the police presence, and the whispers among the high-society guests were already spreading like wildfire through Manhattan’s financial circles.

"Chloe!" Julian called up the grand staircase, his voice strained. "The driver is going to be here in twenty minutes! Are you finished?"

"Almost, darling!" Chloe’s voice drifted down, light and utterly unbothered. "Make sure the butler chilled the Dom Pérignon for the car ride to the airstrip!"

Julian pinched the bridge of his nose, feeling a deep, sickening knot tightening in his gut. Ever since he had seen Maya’s hand come away drenched in blood, something inside him had fractured. He had seen Chloe’s cruelty before—in the way she treated waitstaff, the way she spoke about her former friends—but he had always chalked it up to being spoiled.

Last night, however, standing three feet away from her when she lunged with that cake, he had seen something else in her eyes.

A flash of pure, predatory hatred.

A heavy, metallic thud echoed through the foyer.

Julian jumped, sloshing coffee onto the marble counter.

*BANG. BANG. BANG.*

It wasn't the polite ring of the front doorbell. It was a heavy, rhythmic pounding that rattled the double mahogany doors on their brass hinges.

Julian set his mug down and walked quickly through the foyer, his heart hammering against his ribs. He unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open, expecting to see their private driver complaining about the security gate.

Instead, he was met with a wall of dark blue tactical windbreakers and gold shields.

Detective Mark Vance stood on the front porch, flanked by four uniformed Southampton town police officers and two New York State troopers. Behind them, three unmarked cruisers and a state pursuit vehicle blocked the circular driveway, their red and blue strobe lights flashing silently against the pristine white façade of the estate.

Julian froze, the color draining entirely from his face. "What... what is the meaning of this? This is private property."

"Julian Sterling?" Detective Vance asked, stepping forward without breaking stride.

"Yes, but—"

"I’m Detective Vance, NYPD Major Case Squad, working in conjunction with the State Police. Step aside, sir."

"Do you have a warrant?" Julian demanded, his voice cracking as his legal training instinctively kicked in.

Vance pulled a folded document with a red embossed court seal from his coat pocket and held it three inches from Julian’s nose. "Warrant to search these premises and a warrant for the immediate arrest of Chloe Linwood-Sterling. Where is your wife?"

Before Julian could answer, the sharp click-clack of high heels sounded against the hardwood floor of the upper mezzanine.

"Julian, who is at the door?" Chloe called out, leaning over the white banister. She was wearing a chic camel-hair travel coat, oversized designer shades pushed up into her hair, and a diamond tennis bracelet that caught the chandelier light. "If that’s the luggage service, tell them to come up and—"

Her voice cut off.

She stopped dead on the landing.

Her gaze traveled from the fleet of police cruisers outside the open doors to the circle of armed officers standing in her foyer. For the first time in her life, the flawless, impenetrable mask of Chloe Linwood cracked.

Vance looked up the staircase, resting one hand casually on the handle of his sidearm.

"Chloe Linwood," Vance’s voice boomed through the high-ceilinged foyer, authoritative and devoid of mercy. "Step down the stairs with your hands empty and visible. Right now."

Chloe’s chest heaved. She took a step back, her hands gripping the mahogany railing so tightly her knuckles turned white.

"What is this?" she screeched, her voice pitching up into that shrill, panicked register she used whenever she lost control. "Julian! Call your father! Call him right now! What are these people doing in our house?!"

"Chloe," Julian whispered, backing away from the officers with his hands raised. "Just... just come down."

"No!" she screamed, her eyes darting toward the hallway behind her, as if looking for an escape route that didn't exist. "This is harassment! My sister put you up to this, didn't she?! That miserable, jealous little bitch couldn't stand that I had a beautiful wedding, so she made up some insane lie!"

Detective Vance didn't argue. He didn't raise his voice. He simply signaled with two fingers to the state troopers behind him.

"Take her into custody."

The two troopers moved up the grand staircase with rapid, practiced efficiency. Chloe backed into the hallway, screaming obscenities, kicking blindly as the officers cornered her against an antique console table.

"Get your filthy hands off me!" she shrieked, her voice echoing through the multimillion-dollar mansion. "Do you have any idea who my father-in-law is?! You'll lose your badges! You'll all be fired!"

Within seconds, the troopers had her arms pinned behind her back. The sharp, mechanical *click* of steel handcuffs ratcheting around her delicate wrists cut through her screams like a gunshot.

They marched her down the stairs. Her hair was coming undone, her designer coat was twisted, and her face was mottled with ugly, blotchy patches of purple rage.

As they reached the foyer, Vance stepped directly into her path.

He held up a clear evidence bag.

Inside was the three-inch industrial blade, the heavy lead sinker, and the twisted copper wire, still flecked with the dried remnants of almond sponge and my blood.

Chloe’s breath hitched. Her eyes dilated with terror.

"Recognize this, Chloe?" Vance asked softly. "Elena Morales at *The Confectionery Vault* sends her regards. She just finished giving a full sworn confession, complete with the security footage of you handing her the cash."

Chloe went entirely limp, her knees buckling beneath her. If the two state troopers hadn't been holding her arms, she would have collapsed onto the marble floor.

"Julian..." she whimpered, turning her desperate, pleading eyes toward her new husband. "Julian, please. Help me. It was an accident. I swear it was an accident..."

Julian stood frozen against the wall. He looked at the bloody blade in the evidence bag, then looked at his bride of less than twenty-four hours.

Slowly, deliberately, Julian reached down with his right hand, slipped his brand-new platinum wedding band off his finger, and let it drop onto the floor.

It rolled across the marble with a hollow, lonely clatter, stopping at Chloe’s feet.

"Get her out of my house," Julian said to the detective, without looking at her again.
