Chapter 2 - The Midnight Ambush

The elevator bell down the corridor chimed with an ominous, metallic ring.
David moved immediately, placing his broad frame between me and the reinforced mahogany door of our penthouse suite. He didn’t draw the weapon from his waistband, but his right hand remained resting firmly on the grip. I stepped backward toward the nursery, my pulse drumming so violently in my ears that it drowned out the hum of the refrigerator.
Through the peephole’s digital display mounted on the wall, the screen flickered to life. Two men in dark wool coats stood outside our door. They weren't police officers, and they certainly weren't Arthur. Between them stood Chloe, wrapped in a fur coat that smelled of stale wine and desperation, her mascara streaked across her pale cheeks.
"Open the damn door, David!" Chloe’s voice was muffled through the wood, but the shrill fury was unmistakable. "Open it right now! Do you have any idea what you’ve done? Mom is having a medical emergency, the bank canceled our credit lines at midnight, and Dad won't answer his phone! Stop playing these sick games!"
David tapped the intercom button. His voice was utterly emotionless. "Chloe, you are trespassing on private residential property. Leave before the tactical unit gets here."
"Tactical unit?" Chloe laughed, a jagged, hysterical sound. "You think you scare me? These gentlemen are Mom’s personal security consultants. You’re going to open this door, give us the hard drives, and Maya is going to sign the release form relinquishing her guardianship claim over the family trust. If you don't, I will personally go to the press tomorrow morning and tell them your wife assaulted our mother at Christmas dinner. We already took pictures of Mom’s bruised arm!"
I felt a cold rage surge through my veins. Evelyn had struck me three times with enough force to split my skin, and now they were framing themselves as the victims.
"She has nothing to say to you, Chloe," David said into the microphone. "And for the record, the dining room has 4K surveillance cameras integrated into the architectural moldings. Arthur installed them five years ago when silverware started disappearing from the estate. Every slap, every word, every threat against Lily was uploaded to a secure off-site cloud server forty-five minutes ago."
Silence slammed down on the other side of the door. Chloe stared directly at the camera lens, her jaw dropping. The two security thugs exchanged uncomfortable glances, their postures visibly shifting from predatory to defensive.
"You're bluffing," Chloe stammered, though her voice lacked its earlier venom. "Dad wouldn't do that to Mom. He wouldn't destroy his own family."
"Arthur didn't destroy this family," a deep, raspy voice echoed from the elevator vestibule behind Chloe.
We watched the digital monitor in stunned disbelief as Arthur Vance stepped into the hallway.
He looked ten years older than he had when we sat down for dinner five hours earlier. His silver hair was disheveled by the coastal wind, his tailored suit jacket unbuttoned, but his eyes held an authority that could not be faked. Flanking him were two uniformed Stamford police officers and a slender woman carrying a briefcase—Eleanor's longtime estate attorney, Margaret Sterling.
"Dad?" Chloe gasped, spinning around. "Dad, tell these officers to arrest David! He’s locked us out, he stole the company—"
"Be quiet, Chloe," Arthur said. The sheer exhaustion in his voice hit like a sledgehammer. "Just shut your mouth for once in your privileged, parasitic life."
Chloe looked as if she had been slapped. The two private bodyguards immediately stepped away from the door, raising their hands in submission before the uniformed officers.
"Officers," Arthur said, pointing a steady finger at the two men, "these two individuals are operating without a valid private security license in this municipality. Escort them off the premises. As for my daughter, if she steps one foot back into this building, she is to be taken into custody for criminal harassment."
"Dad! You can't do this!" Chloe shrieked as the officers firmly took her by the elbows, guiding her backward toward the service elevators. "Mom will destroy you! She’ll take everything in the divorce!"
"There won't be anything for her to take," Arthur replied coldly. "Because there is no longer a Vance fortune. There is only what belongs to Lily."
David unlocked the deadbolts. The heavy door swung open.
Arthur stepped across the threshold, his shoulders sagging the moment the door clicked shut behind him. He looked at David, then turned his gaze toward me. When his eyes landed on the bruised, swollen side of my face and my split lip, a tremor ran through the old man’s frame. He covered his mouth with a trembling hand, tears welling in the corners of his eyes.
"Maya..." Arthur’s voice cracked. "My God. I am so sorry. I knew Evelyn was bitter. I knew she was cruel. But I never imagined she would lay hands on you. In my own home. In front of my granddaughter."
"Arthur, sit down," I said gently, guiding him toward the sofa. Despite the chaos, seeing this titan of industry reduced to grief made my anger temporarily subside. "Drink some water. Tell us what happened after we left."
Arthur sank into the cushions, resting his elbows on his knees. Margaret Sterling stood beside him, opening her briefcase and laying out several thick folders sealed with red legal tape.
"When you walked out," Arthur began, staring blankly at the rug, "Evelyn threw an absolute fit. She began smashing the antique crystal on the floor, screaming that David was dead to her. She told Chloe to call our asset manager at private banking to drain David’s personal liquid accounts. She wanted to leave you destitute by sunrise."
"And that’s when you dropped the hammer?" David asked, crossing his arms.
"I didn't have a choice, son," Arthur murmured. "I sat down in my study, brought up the bank portal, and authorized the full audit Eleanor mandated in her will. Within ten minutes, the system flagged eight million dollars transferred out of Vance Capital over the last eighteen months into Chloe’s dummy LLC in Delaware. Evelyn was signing off on the disbursements. It wasn't just gross mismanagement, David. It was federal wire fraud."
Margaret Sterling adjusted her glasses and stepped forward. "When Mr. Vance confronted Evelyn with the forensic accounting reports in the library two hours ago, she tried to physically burn the paper trail in the fireplace. When that failed, she threatened to fabricate domestic abuse charges against Arthur to seize emergency control of the marital estate."
"She threatened Arthur?" I gasped.
"She didn't just threaten him," Margaret said grimly. "She pulled an antique letter opener from the desk and lunged at him. Arthur locked himself in the panic room and phoned David. That was the call you received."
David’s jaw tightened until the muscles in his cheek twitched. "Where is she now?"
"She fled the estate before the Greenwich police arrived," Arthur said, raising his head. "She took her passport, three jewelry boxes, and the keys to the Mercedes convertible. But she won't get far. The state police have issued a BOLO—be on the lookout—for her vehicle."
"She’s not running away, Arthur," David said, his voice dropping an octave. "You don't know your wife as well as you think you do. Evelyn doesn't flee when she loses. She burns the house down so nobody else can live in it."
Right on cue, David’s laptop on the dining table pinged with an urgent push notification from a prominent New York gossip blog.
David walked over, tapped the trackpad, and turned the screen toward us.
A headline blazed across the front page in sensational yellow font:
*WALL STREET HEIR'S SECRET SCANDAL: DAVID VANCE AND GOLD-DIGGING WIFE ACCUSED OF ELDER ABUSE AND THEFT OF MULTI-MILLION ESTATE. MOTHER SPEAKS OUT FROM SECRET LOCATION.*
Beneath the headline was a cropped photo of Evelyn, her eye doctored with a horrific purple bruise, holding a press conference from the lobby of an upscale Manhattan hotel.
"She went straight to the press," I whispered, the blood draining from my face.
"Worse," Margaret Sterling said, checking her buzzing smartphone. "She just filed an emergency petition with the Family Court in Manhattan. She is requesting an emergency custody hearing for Lily, alleging that you and David are operating an abusive, volatile household funded by laundered money."

David looked down at me, his eyes burning with an icy fire. "She wants to touch our daughter? That is the last mistake she will ever make."
