Chapter 4 - The Fortress of Vanity

The penthouse suite at the Plaza Hotel was a monument to old-money excess: gilded molding, velvet drapes, and crystal chandeliers that hung like frozen tears from the eighteen-foot ceilings.

Evelyn Vance stood before the floor-to-ceiling mirror, adjusting a black designer scarf around her neck to cover her trembling throat. Her hands, usually steady and poised with decades of social superiority, were shaking violently. On the marble vanity lay three empty champagne flutes, a half-empty bottle of prescription sedatives, and three burner phones she had purchased from a bodega in Midtown.

She snatched the latest burner phone and punched in Chloe’s number for the ninth time.

*“The customer you are trying to reach has been placed on an administrative hold or is currently unavailable.”*

"Useless idiot!" Evelyn hissed, slamming the phone against the gilded vanity. The glass screen spider-webbed under the impact. "I told her to take the driver. I told her to get the child and go straight to the estate in the Hamptons!"

She paced the Persian rug, her heels digging viciously into the antique fabric. She had spent forty years building the Vance dynasty into a social weapon. She had endured Arthur’s cold detachment, she had forced her children through the most prestigious boarding schools, and she had dominated every charity gala from Manhattan to Palm Beach.

She had not sacrificed her entire life just to be unseated by a nobody—a middle-class girl with an education degree whom David had met at a public library fundraiser.

"She’s a nobody," Evelyn muttered aloud, her voice spiraling into manic conviction. "A parasite. Arthur is losing his mind. Dementia. That’s what it is. I’ll have him committed. I will hire three private psychiatrists, swear he’s incompetent, invalidate the trust restructuring, and put David in his place."

She turned back to her vanity and picked up her solid-gold Montblanc pen to draft a statement for her high-priced crisis PR manager.

Then came the knock.

Not a polite hotel room service tap. It was a heavy, rhythmic, authoritative thud that rattled the heavy oak door on its hinges.

*“Federal Bureau of Investigation! Open the door, Mrs. Vance!”*

Evelyn froze. The pen dropped from her fingers, rolling across the mahogany floor.

"Federal?" she whispered, her chest tightening until she couldn't pull air into her lungs. "No. No, this is a civil dispute. Arthur wouldn't involve the feds. Arthur would never air our dirty laundry to the government!"

*“We have an active arrest warrant issued by the Southern District of New York and a search authorization for all electronic devices! Open this door immediately, or we will breach!”*

Evelyn looked wildly around the suite. There was nowhere to run. She was twelve stories above Fifth Avenue. In a panic, she snatched the three velvet jewelry pouches containing four million dollars worth of uninsured family diamonds and stuffed them into her leather tote bag. She sprinted toward the terrace doors, hoping to reach the fire escape, but the lock was frozen with winter ice.

*BOOM.*

The master suite door exploded inward, splintering off the frame.

Six FBI agents in tactical gear flooded into the suite, their tactical rifles raised, followed by two senior special agents in dark suits and overcoats.

"Evelyn Vance! Put the bag down and raise your hands!" Special Agent Marcus Kane barked, his badge gleaming under the crystal chandelier.

Evelyn spun around, her aristocratic pride flaring up one final, disastrous time. She pulled herself to her full height, lifting her chin with contempt.

"How dare you enter my private quarters!" she shrieked, her voice echoing through the penthouse. "Do you have any idea who I am?! I am Evelyn Vance! My family donates millions to the Police Athletic League! I have dinner with the Governor! Get out of this room before I have your badges revoked by sunset!"

Agent Kane didn't blink. He walked forward calmly, pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt, and motioned to the female agent beside him.

"Evelyn Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit federal wire fraud, interstate extortion, witness tampering, and felony assault on a minor’s legal guardian," Kane recited in a flat, clinical voice.

The female agent grabbed Evelyn’s right arm, twisting it behind her back.

"Don't touch me! You filthy, uneducated peasant, take your hands off my coat! That is custom Valentino!" Evelyn screamed, thrashing wildly.

Her foot slipped on the rug, and she crashed down onto her knees against the hard oak floor. As the cold metal cuffs clicked shut around her wrists, the black scarf slipped from her neck, revealing no bruises at all—only the expensive pearl necklace she had worn while assaulting me at Christmas dinner.

Downstairs, in the lobby of the Plaza, tourists, hotel guests, and paparazzi had gathered behind velvet ropes.

When the brass elevator doors parted, Evelyn Vance was marched out in handcuffs. Her hair was completely disheveled, her makeup smeared with sweat and fury, her hands bound behind her back like a common street criminal. The flashbulbs erupted in a blinding, deafening roar.

Among the crowd standing near the grand revolving doors stood Arthur Vance, flanked by David and Margaret Sterling.

Arthur looked at his wife of nearly four decades. There was no anger in his eyes—only the cold, immovable finality of an executioner who had completed his duty.

Evelyn spotted him. Her eyes flared with venomous hatred.

"Arthur!" she screamed across the lobby, her voice echoing off the marble pillars. "You traitor! You gave our kingdom to that filthy little whore and her bastard child! I will destroy you! I will tear that estate down board by board before I let her set foot inside it!"

David stepped forward, his eyes burning into his mother’s.

"You won't tear down anything, Mother," David said, his voice quiet enough for only her and the agents to hear. "The Greenwich estate is no longer Vance property. We just deeded the entire forty-acre compound to the Stamford Children’s Crisis Center in Maya’s name. By tomorrow afternoon, the locks are changed, and your portrait above the fireplace is being burned."

Evelyn’s eyes widened in sheer, catastrophic horror. She opened her mouth to scream, but only a choked, pathetic gasp came out.

"Let’s go, Mrs. Vance," Agent Kane said, pushing her through the revolving doors into the flashing cameras of the waiting media circus.
