Chapter 5 - The Legal Ambush

By Wednesday afternoon, Richard Vance was floating on air.
He strutted through the offices of Vance Logistics, shouting orders at warehouse supervisors and flirting openly with Vanessa at the water cooler. A process server had successfully delivered divorce papers to the motel address where his private investigator had tracked Maya.
The terms Richard had drafted were draconian: full legal and physical custody of Lily awarded to Richard, zero spousal support, and an injunction barring Maya from coming within five hundred feet of the marital home or the company premises.
“She hasn’t called?” Olivia Vance asked her son over speakerphone from her tennis club in the Hamptons.
“Not a peep, Mom,” Richard chuckled, leaning back in his leather swivel chair. “Her phone goes straight to voicemail. She’s probably sleeping in some homeless shelter by now. The court hearing is set for Friday. When she doesn’t show up because she can’t afford an attorney, the judge will grant me a default judgment.”
“Good riddance,” Olivia sniffed. “Make sure you change the locks on the safe before she tries to steal my silver back.”
Just then, his secretary buzzed the intercom. “Mr. Vance? There’s a messenger here from Sterling Capital Partners.”
Richard sat bolt upright. “Send him in immediately!”
A courier in a charcoal uniform entered, placing a heavy, gold-embossed folder on Richard’s desk. “From the executive board, Mr. Vance. An invitation to finalize the equity financing package tomorrow morning at ten o'clock sharp in the Ashford Boardroom at Sterling Tower.”
Richard’s hands shook with excitement as he tore open the envelope. Inside was a preliminary term sheet indicating a willingness to invest up to *ten million dollars*—double what he had originally requested.
“Vanessa!” Richard roared, sprinting out of his office. “Get the champagne! We did it! The Sterling deal is locked!”
Vanessa ran to him, throwing her arms around his neck in front of the entire office staff. “I knew you were a genius, baby! We’re going to be millionaires!”
Meanwhile, inside a private conference room at the Manhattan law offices of Ward & Associates, Maya sat across from Lawrence Ward—the most feared family law attorney on the Eastern Seaboard.
Ward turned a pen between his fingers, examining the divorce petition Richard had filed.
“Mr. Vance has made a catastrophic legal error,” Ward said with a razor-thin smile. “He filed an emergency ex-parte motion claiming you abandoned the child. However, we have time-stamped hospital admission records showing you admitted Lily to Mount Sinai with acute respiratory failure resulting directly from his willful termination of her health insurance.”
He pushed a newly drafted set of counter-petitions across the mahogany table toward Maya.
“Under New York domestic relations law, his actions constitute criminal child endangerment and severe financial coercion. We aren't just contesting custody, Mrs. Vance. We are filing for an emergency freeze of all marital and corporate assets, an immediate order of protection, and an expedited forensic audit of Vance Logistics.”
Maya picked up the fountain pen. For years, she had accepted Richard’s insults, his mother’s sneers, and the slow erosion of her self-worth, telling herself she was staying for Lily’s stability.
Now, looking down at the legal documents, she signed her name with an unwavering hand.
*Maya Linnea Ashford-Vance.*
“Don't serve him yet, Mr. Ward,” Maya said quietly, her eyes gleaming with cold calculation.
Julian, leaning against the window frame behind her, smiled faintly. “You want him to walk into the boardroom first?”
May you like
“I want him to believe his dreams have finally come true,” Maya replied. “It makes the fall so much sweeter.”
