Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

“This is a joke,” Richard stammered, his face turning an alarming shade of mottled purple. He shot up from his seat, slamming his palms onto the table. “Julian, I don’t know what kind of sick stunt this is, but this woman is a nobody! She’s my estranged wife! She’s an uneducated waitress who stole my daughter and ran off into the night!”

“Sit down, Mr. Vance,” Julian said. The words weren't loud, but the sheer, lethal menace in his voice forced Richard back into his chair as if he had been physically struck.

Maya turned a page of the leather-bound ledger in front of her.

“Let’s talk about Vance Logistics,” Maya began, her tone measured, calm, and utterly devastating. “Over the past three years, you have used three separate dummy corporations—registered under your mother’s maiden name—to route unpaid diesel fuel surcharges away from state tax authorities.”

She slid a document toward the center of the table.

“You forged customs declarations on four commercial freight shipments entering the Port of Newark last November, misrepresenting industrial machine parts as agricultural tools to evade thirty percent tariffs.”

Richard’s mouth opened and closed soundlessly. Sweat was pouring down his temples, soaking his starched collar. “That’s... that’s proprietary trade strategy. You don't understand how logistics works—”

“And here,” Maya continued, tapping a thick stack of bank reconciliations, “are thirty-four wire transfers totaling eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars, funneled directly from company payroll reserves into personal checking accounts to pay for your rented luxury cars, country club dues, and the diamond tennis bracelet currently sitting on Vanessa’s wrist.”

Vanessa flinched, instinctively pulling her sleeve down to cover her arm.

“You’re an embezzler, Richard,” Maya said, finally meeting his eyes with an icy, merciless gaze. “You are drowning in seven million dollars of personal and commercial debt. The only reason your creditors hadn't foreclosed on your warehouse in Queens was because you convinced them that Sterling Capital was about to buy you out.”

“Maya, please—” Richard’s arrogance evaporated, replaced by an ugly, frantic desperation. He leaned across the table, his hands trembling. “Maya, we’re family! Think of Lily! We’ve had our arguments, but I did all of this for us! For our future!”

“For our future?” Maya whispered, leaning in just slightly. “Four days ago, you shoved my face into our daughter’s birthday cake. You laughed while your mistress filmed it. You canceled my daughter’s medical insurance while she was choking for air in an urgent care clinic.”

She picked up a fountain pen and signed the final document in the folder.

“As the controlling shareholder of Ashford Holdings, which owns ninety percent of the commercial real estate notes on your warehousing facilities, I am calling your loans due in full. Effective twelve o’clock today.”

A man in a dark suit standing near the door stepped forward, displaying a gold shield.
