Chapter 10 - The Sovereign's Grace

*(Word count: ~1,580 words)*

Three months later, spring arrived at Willow Brook.

The deep snow that had blanketed the estate for four grueling months melted into the fertile black earth, giving way to endless carpets of violet crocus, golden daffodils, and sweet-smelling emerald grass. The forty-acre grounds were alive with the song of robins returning from the south, and the cold, gray limestone of the Moretti mansion seemed to glow warm and amber beneath the April sunshine.

On the south lawn, near the newly restored marble fountain, an enormous black dog was engaged in a matter of critical strategic importance: chasing a bright yellow rubber ball.

Bruno’s limp was completely gone. His scarred coat shone like polished obsidian in the midday sun, his chest broad and powerful, though he ran with a clumsy, joyful abandon that made a mockery of his terrifying reputation.

"Throw it again, Daddy! Throw it farther!"

Emma stood near the edge of the terrace lawn, wearing a bright yellow sundress with matching ribbons in her hair. She was four years old now—her birthday had been celebrated two weeks earlier with a carousel built temporarily on the east lawn and enough cake to feed the entire Chicago police department—and she possessed an absolute, undisputed authority over every soul on the property.

Standing beside her was Alessandro Moretti.

The Don of Chicago wore no tie today. His white linen shirt was unbuttoned at the throat, the sleeves rolled up to reveal his strong, tan forearms, his dark hair ruffled by the gentle spring breeze. In his right hand, he held the slobber-soaked rubber ball.

"Farther?" Alessandro asked, arching a dark brow at the little girl. "If I throw it any farther, your friend is going to crash through Mrs. Gable’s greenhouse."

"He won't!" Emma insisted, jumping up and down on the grass. "Bruno is a smart boy! He knows how to stop!"

Alessandro chuckled—a rich, deep, resonant sound that had become a daily fixture of the estate—and reared back, launching the ball fifty yards across the manicured turf.

Bruno let out a joyful, booming bark that echoed off the stone walls and tore across the grass like a thunderbolt, his massive paws kicking up clumps of green turf as he chased the bouncing yellow toy.

Walking down the stone terrace steps carrying a pitcher of fresh lemonade and crystal glasses was Sophia.

She looked breathtaking. The gaunt hollows in her cheeks had filled out into soft, glowing beauty, her skin radiant with health and happiness. She wore a simple white linen sundress that fluttered around her calves, her honey-brown hair falling in soft waves across her shoulders. On her left ring finger, catching the sunlight with dazzling, blinding brilliance, sat an eight-carat flawless emerald cut diamond, flanked by two platinum baguettes.

Don Alessandro Moretti’s engagement ring.

Alessandro turned as she approached, his sharp, handsome features softening into that tender, fiercely possessive warmth he reserved only for her. He stepped forward, taking the heavy silver tray from her hands and setting it on the wrought-iron patio table, before wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her against his side.

"You shouldn't be carrying heavy trays," Alessandro chided gently, his lips brushing against her temple. "We have forty people on payroll who would fight for the privilege."

Sophia laughed, leaning into his warmth, her hand resting against the steady, rhythmic beating of his chest. "Alessandro, it’s a pitcher of lemons and sugar. I was a housekeeper for five years. If I sit still all day like a princess, I'll lose my mind."

"You are not a princess," Alessandro murmured, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a heat that made her heart flutter like a schoolgirl’s. "You are my sovereign. There is a distinct difference in rank."

He lowered his head, his lips claiming hers in a deep, slow, intoxicating kiss that tasted of sweet spring air and eternal promises. Sophia closed her eyes, her fingers threading through the dark hair at the nape of his neck, melting into the embrace of the man who had torn down the underworld to give her a kingdom of peace.

A wet, heavy thud interrupted them.

Bruno had returned. The massive dog stood beside them, panting happily, the yellow ball resting between his front paws on the patio flagstones. He looked up at the two of them, his amber eyes shining with absolute, contented adoration, before leaning his heavy shoulder affectionately against Sophia’s legs.

"Ew, Bruno! Slobber!" Emma giggled, running over and throwing her arms around the dog's thick neck, burying her face into his black fur. Bruno closed his eyes, his tail sweeping back and forth across the stone like a metronome of pure domestic bliss.

Across the lawn, Marco Reyes walked briskly up the gravel path.

The underboss was dressed in his customary dark suit, but his posture was relaxed, a rare, faint smile touching his scarred lips. He held a leather portfolio under his arm.

"Boss," Marco greeted with a respectful nod. "The paperwork from the Cook County Family Court arrived twenty minutes ago. Judge Callahan signed the final decrees."

Alessandro’s arm tightened around Sophia’s waist. "And?"

Marco opened the leather folder, drawing out two official documents stamped with the gold seal of the State of Illinois.

"First: the adoption decree," Marco announced, his voice softening with genuine warmth. "Emma Grace Carter is now officially and legally Emma Grace Moretti. Her birth certificate has been amended and sealed by court order."

Sophia gasped, a hand flying to her mouth as happy tears welled in her eyes. Alessandro looked at the paper, his jaw tightening slightly with a deep, profound emotion that went beyond power, beyond wealth, beyond anything his syndicate could ever provide.

He had a daughter. A real, true daughter who looked at his scarred hands and saw only love.

"And the second document?" Alessandro asked quietly.

"The deed of transfer," Marco replied, handing the second paper to Sophia. "The West Side tenement blocks where Jimmy Fallon operated have been completely cleared and leveled. Construction begins next Monday on the Sophia Carter Women’s Sanctuary and Medical Center. Fully funded through our private endowment. Three hundred beds, full security, legal aid, and transitional housing for women and children escaping domestic abuse."

Sophia took the paper, her tears spilling over, wetting the official seal. She looked up at Alessandro, her heart overflowing with an awe so profound it stole her breath.

"You built a sanctuary for them," she whispered.

"I built an empire to protect you, Sophia," Alessandro said softly, his calloused thumb gently wiping the tears from her cheeks. "It is only right that our empire protects those who are still waiting for their morning in the snow."

Emma suddenly tugged on Alessandro’s trouser leg, holding up the slobber-covered yellow ball. "Daddy! It's your turn to throw! Bruno is waiting!"

Alessandro looked down at the little girl—*his* little girl—and then looked at Sophia, the woman who had walked into his stone castle and brought the dead back to life.

"All right, Emma," Alessandro smiled, scooping the child up onto his broad shoulder with one arm, holding Sophia’s hand with the other, and taking the ball from the grass. "Let’s see if your friend can fly."

May you like

Alessandro launched the ball high into the azure spring sky, watching it arc across the green lawn toward the glittering fountain.

With a joyful, booming roar of thunder, the savage beast who had spent ten years waiting for a friend bounded across the grass, running free under the warm sun, leaving the cold winter forever behind.
