Chapter 7 - The Siege of Willow Brook

*(Word count: ~1,560 words)*
The blizzard struck Chicago at midnight with the force of an arctic hammer.
By three in the morning, sustained winds of fifty miles per hour were howling through the wrought-iron gates of the Moretti estate, driving snow horizontally across the long driveway and burying the lower perimeter sensors in three-foot drifts. The towering oaks of Willow Brook groaned under the weight of the ice, their heavy boughs snapping like gunshots in the frozen dark.
Inside the mansion, the emergency generators hummed softly in the basement, keeping the lights burning low and the radiators hissing.
In Suite 3A, Sophia sat on the floor beside Emma’s bed, unable to calm the trembling in her limbs. The encounter at the Drake Hotel had ripped the scab off a wound she thought she had buried. *Derrick was here.* Valenti knew. The underworld was a spider’s web, and the thread had just been pulled.
"Mommy?" Emma’s sleepy voice broke through the howling of the gale outside. The little girl rubbed her eyes, hugging her one-eared teddy bear against her chest. "Is the wind angry?"
"No, baby," Sophia whispered, smoothing her daughter’s dark curls. "The wind is just cold. Go back to sleep. Mommy is right here."
Beside the bed, Bruno stood up.
He didn't make a sound, but his entire posture had shifted into that terrifying, rigid alertness that Sophia had come to recognize. His ears were cocked toward the window facing the west lawn. His nostrils flared, scenting the air drifting through the double-paned glass.
A split second later, the lights flickered twice and died.
Total darkness plunged the room into cold shadow, punctuated only by the faint silver glow of the blizzard outside the frosted windowpanes. Downstairs, the steady hum of the emergency generators ceased with an abrupt, mechanical clank.
*The power was cut.*
Sophia’s heart hammered violently against her ribs. She leapt to her feet, scooping Emma from the bed, her breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps. "Bruno..."
The dog was already at the door. A deep, rattling snarl began in the base of his throat—a sound full of ancient, primeval violence.
Down the hallway, the sharp, deafening chatter of automatic gunfire erupted.
It wasn't a stealth probe like three nights ago. This was an all-out assault. Glass shattered on the floor below, followed by the concussive boom of flashbang grenades echoing through the grand stairwell. Shouts in Italian and English, screams of wounded guards, and the relentless, rhythmic pounding of assault rifles turned the stately home into an active war zone within seconds.
"Marco!" a voice roared through the smoke downstairs—Alessandro’s voice, raw, furious, and commanding. "Hold the grand foyer! Fall back to the central corridor! Seal the upper level!"
Sophia backed into the far corner of the bedroom, clutching Emma tightly against her chest. Emma buried her face in her mother’s neck, crying in terror as the walls vibrated with the concussive force of high-caliber rounds tearing through the floorboards below.
"Shh, baby, I've got you. Mommy’s got you," Sophia sobbed, her tears soaking into Emma’s cotton pajamas.
The heavy oak door of Suite 3A was kicked inward with a tremendous crash.
Sophia screamed.
A man stumbled through the ruined frame—not an intruder, but Luca, one of Alessandro’s trusted inner-circle lieutenants. His face was streaked with soot, his shoulder drenched in dark blood, an MP5 submachine gun clutched in his left hand.
"Sophia! Miss Carter!" Luca gasped, his breath coming in ragged, bloody wheezes. "The boss sent me. Valenti brought thirty men from the West Side syndicate. They breached the carriage house and took the security room. They're coming up the service stairs right now!"
"Where is Alessandro?" Sophia cried out, her voice cracking.
"He's pinned down in the gallery!" Luca coughed, spitting a glob of blood onto the floorboards. "He said you have to take the servant tunnel through the pantry! It leads to the underground garage beneath the greenhouse! The armored Suburban is prepped! Go! Now!"
Bruno stood between Luca and Sophia. The dog did not move toward the door. His yellow eyes were fixed on Luca, his upper lip curled so high his pink gums were completely exposed. A low, vibrating warning rumbled from his chest.
"Move the damn dog!" Luca yelled, raising his weapon slightly. "We don't have time! They're hitting the third floor in thirty seconds!"
Sophia looked at Bruno.
For three days, Bruno had accepted Luca. Luca had brought meat to the suite; Luca had walked the perimeter with Alessandro. Why was the dog snarling at him now?
Then, Sophia’s eyes dropped to Luca’s waist.
Hanging from his tactical belt was an encrypted Motorola radio—not the black units Alessandro’s men carried with the Moretti family insignia stamped on the casing, but a silver, civilian-grade model with a piece of blue electrical tape across the battery pack.
She had seen that exact radio an hour ago at the Drake Hotel.
Tucked into the breast pocket of Marco Valenti’s lead bodyguard.
Sophia’s blood ran colder than the ice storm outside. "You turned."
Luca froze. His eyes widened, the panicked, desperate mask slipping away to reveal the cold, rat-like calculation of a traitor who had sold out his Don for a million-dollar payout from the Valenti family.
"Smart girl," Luca sneered, his voice dropping into a flat, venomous register as he raised the muzzle of the submachine gun toward Sophia’s chest. "Valenti wants the kid. He says Derrick’s got a right to his daughter, and Moretti will hand over every river dock in the state to get you back alive. Now drop the brat and step away, or I'll take her out of your cold hands—"
He never finished the sentence.
Bruno didn't wait for a command. He didn't bark. He launched his seventy-five-kilo body across the eight feet of bedroom like a missile of black muscle and rage.
Luca fired instinctively, the burst of three 9mm rounds ripping through the air. One bullet grazed Bruno’s shoulder, tearing a bright red furrow through the thick fur, but the impact didn't even slow the beast down.
Bruno slammed into Luca’s chest, the sickening crunch of breaking ribs echoing through the bedroom as both the man and the beast crashed into the heavy marble fireplace. The submachine gun clattered across the floor.
Luca shrieked in agony, his hands clawing at Bruno’s throat, but the mastiff’s jaws clamped down around the traitor’s shoulder with the force of an industrial vice. Bruno shook his massive head once, twice, slamming Luca’s skull against the white Carrara marble until the man’s eyes rolled back and his limbs went limp.
Bruno stood over the unconscious traitor, panting heavily, blood dripping from his shoulder wound onto the white fur of his chest. He turned his scarred head, looking at Sophia and Emma.
Emma was crying hysterically, but she held out her tiny hand toward the bleeding animal. "Bruno... good boy... Bruno..."
Heavy, thundering footsteps charged down the corridor outside.
Sophia scrambled across the floor, her fingers finding the fallen submachine gun Luca had dropped. She didn't know how to shoot, but she picked up the cold, heavy metal, her finger slipping onto the trigger guard, her body positioned squarely in front of her daughter and the injured dog.
A tall, broad figure burst through the shattered doorway, a customized tactical rifle raised.
Sophia screamed, lifting the gun.
"Sophia! Down!"
The voice broke through the panic like a beacon of fire in the dark.
It was Alessandro.
His tuxedo jacket was gone, his dress shirt shredded at the shoulder and blackened with cordite, his face covered in soot and blood. Behind him stood Marco Reyes and four heavily armed loyalists, their barrels sweeping the hallway.
Alessandro saw the gun in Sophia’s hands. He saw the unconscious traitor lying broken against the hearth. He saw Bruno, bleeding from the shoulder, standing guard over the child.
Alessandro lowered his rifle instantly. In two long strides, he crossed the room and fell to his knees before Sophia, his large, calloused hands gripping her trembling wrists, gently forcing the muzzle of the submachine gun down toward the floorboards.
"It’s over," Alessandro breathed, his voice raw, shaking with an emotion no man in Chicago had ever heard from Don Moretti. "It’s over. You're safe. I've got you."
Sophia looked at him—at the soot on his brow, the fierce, terrifying possessiveness burning in his dark eyes, the way his strong hands held hers without an ounce of harm—and the remaining strength broke inside her. She dropped the gun and buried her face against his chest, weeping uncontrollably into the bloodstained linen of his shirt.
Alessandro wrapped his powerful arms around her, pulling her and Emma tightly against his chest, burying his face in Sophia’s hair while the blizzard roared through the shattered house.

"Marco," Alessandro whispered, his voice turning into an arctic decree that sealed the fate of an entire city. "Execute every Valenti soldier on this property. Call the captains. By dawn, I want Marco Valenti, Jimmy Fallon, and this Derrick vermin brought to my feet in chains."
