Chapter 6 - Ambush at the Estate

The shrill alarm shattered the moment.
My mafia instincts kicked in instantly. I grabbed Emma by the wrist, pulling her behind me as I drew a concealed compact pistol from my ankle holster.
"Stay behind me!" I commanded, moving swiftly toward the gym door.
Dominic’s voice crackled frantically through my ear piece. "Boss! We have multiple armed hostiles breaching the north gate! They’ve cut the main power grid and killed the outer guards! They’re moving toward the west wing!"
The west wing. Where Noah’s bedroom was located.
"Silvio," I growled through gritted teeth.
"Noah!" Emma gasped, her face going pale with sudden terror. "Vincent, Noah is up there!"
"I know!" I shouted above the noise of sirens and distant gunfire echoing down the marble halls. "Follow me!"
We sprinted through the darkened estate. The emergency red lights cast long, demonic shadows across the walls. Gunfire erupted from the main lobby—heavy automatic rifles clattering against the marble floors as my security team engaged the invaders.
We reached the central staircase just as three men in tactical gear and black ski masks breached the upper landing. They carried suppressed submachine guns.
"Down!" I yelled, pulling Emma into the shadow of a stone pillar.
I leaned out, firing three rapid shots. The heavy 9mm rounds hit the lead shooter in the chest, dropping him instantly over the railing. The other two attackers opened fire, spraying bullet impacts across the stone pillar, showering us with stone dust and plaster.
"Emma, can you handle a firearm?" I asked, looking at her amidst the deafening noise.
Her eyes flicked to the fallen shooter five feet away. The military doctor in her evaporated, replaced instantly by the battle-hardened veteran.
"I was a Captain in the U.S. Army, Vincent," she snapped coldly. "Give me a gun."
I slid my spare magazine across the floor, and in one fluid motion, Emma darted out from behind the pillar, retrieved the dead attacker's submachine gun, checked the chamber, and rolled back into cover.
"Cover the left angle," I ordered.
"On three," she replied, her voice cold as steel.
"One... two... three!"
We stepped out simultaneously. I fired two rounds into the second attacker's throat, while Emma released a controlled three-round burst straight into the third attacker's skull. Both men fell dead on the hardwood floor.
I looked at her, impressed despite the lethal situation. "Nice shooting, Captain."
"Noah first, compliments later!" she yelled.
We sprinted down the upper hallway toward Noah’s room. The door had been kicked open. Inside, I heard the sound of a struggle and my son's terrified screams.
"Dad! Emma! Help!"
We burst into the room.
Dominic was on the floor, bleeding heavily from a gunshot wound to his shoulder, fighting off a massive attacker. Standing near Noah’s bed was Marko—Silvio’s lead enforcer—holding a heavy pistol aimed directly at my son’s chest.
"Don't move, Calder!" Marko screamed, his eyes wild and sweaty. His right thumb was heavily bandaged from where Emma had broken it days earlier. "One step closer and I put a bullet through the kid's head!"
Noah was cowering against his pillows, weeping in terror.
I froze, raising my hands, my gun pointed at Marko’s chest, but I couldn't risk the shot—Marko was using Noah as a human shield.
"Marko," I said, keeping my voice terrifyingly calm. "Put the gun down. You know how this ends. If you hurt my son, there is no corner of this earth where you can hide from me."
"Silvio sends his regards, Vincent!" Marko sneered, his finger tightening on the trigger. "He’s taking over the family tonight!"
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the doorway.
Emma hadn't stopped at the entrance. She had flanked Marko by sliding behind the heavy wooden wardrobe near the wall. Before Marko could pull the trigger, Emma slammed a heavy bronze statue across the back of Marko’s head with lethal force.
Marko stumbled forward, disoriented, dropping his pistol.
I didn't hesitate. I stepped forward and fired a single bullet straight through Marko’s forehead. He collapsed onto the floor, dead before he hit the ground.
Emma rushed past the body, throwing her arms around Noah, pulling him into her chest just as she had done during his night terrors.
"I've got you, baby. I've got you," she whispered fiercely, shielding his eyes from the bloody scene. "You're safe. Your dad and I are right here."
I knelt beside Dominic, checking his wound. "You're going to live, old friend."
"Boss..." Dominic groaned, pointing toward the hallway. "Silvio... he's in the basement... trying to blow the structural columns..."
My eyes flared with absolute, murderous rage. Silvio hadn't just come to kill me—he had come to destroy my entire home, to bury me, my son, and Emma beneath tons of rubble.
I stood up, pulling a fresh magazine from my belt and slamming it into my pistol.
"Emma, stay here with Dominic and Noah," I commanded, my voice dripping with cold death. "Lock the door."
"Vincent, wait!" Emma called out, holding Noah tightly. "He's desperate!"

I looked back at her, my eyes dark with the bloodlust of a mafia king protecting his kingdom.
"So am I," I replied.
