Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

The air in the basement was thick with dust, the smell of gunpowder, and the damp stench of old concrete. The mansion’s underground vaults held centuries of Calder history—wine cellars, safe rooms, and structural support pillars that held up the entire stone estate above.

I descended the spiral staircase quietly, moving like a phantom through the shadows.

In the main vault area, three yellow work lights illuminated Silvio Rossi. He was sweating profusely, trying to set timer charges on the central support column while two surviving mercenaries stood guard with assault rifles.

"Hurry up!" Silvio hissed, his voice echoing in the concrete chamber. "Once the charges are set, we take the boat from the dock! The whole estate will collapse into the ocean!"

"Looking for an exit, Silvio?" my voice boomed from the darkness of the wine cellar entrance.

The two mercenaries whirled around, raising their rifles, but I was already moving.

I fired three shots in rapid succession. The first mercenary took two heavy rounds to the chest, falling backward into a rack of ancient wine bottles, smashing glass and spilling red liquid that looked like blood across the floor. The second mercenary tried to take cover behind a pillar, but I flanked him, firing a round straight through his temple.

Silvio dropped his detonator, stumbling back against the central column, pulling a snub-nosed revolver from his jacket.

"Vincent!" Silvio gasped, raising his gun with trembling hands. "Wait! Listen to me!"

I stepped into the light of the yellow work lamps. My face was cold, emotionless, covered in stone dust and blood splatters. I walked slowly toward him, my pistol pointed directly between his eyes.

"You planted the bomb under my SUV fourteen months ago," I stated—not as a question, but as a absolute fact.

Silvio swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically for an escape route that didn't exist. "It was business, Vincent! Your father promised me the leadership! You were making us soft! You were spending millions on legal businesses and charities!"

"My wife died in that fire, Silvio," I said, my voice dropping to a whisper that cut colder than the autumn wind outside. "My son lost the use of his legs."

"I didn't mean for Caroline to be in the car!" Silvio pleaded, tears of panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade. "It was supposed to be just you! Vincent, please... we are family! I served your father for thirty years!"

"You aren't family," I said smoothly. "You're a parasite."

Silvio screamed and raised his revolver, but I pulled the trigger twice before he could squeeze his finger.

The heavy bullets slammed into Silvio’s chest. He dropped his weapon, falling hard onto the concrete floor, coughing up blood as his life drained into the cold basement floor.

I stood over him until his breathing stopped completely.

Silence descended upon the basement. The threat that had destroyed my family, killed my wife, and haunted my dreams for fourteen months was finally dead.

I reached down, picked up the timer charges, disarmed them calmly, and tossed them aside.

Ten minutes later, I walked back up the stairs. The estate was quiet now. The surviving mercenaries had fled into the woods, where my perimeter guards were already hunting them down.

When I opened the door to Noah’s room, Emma was sitting on the edge of the bed. Noah was fast asleep, exhausted by the trauma, his small hand tucked securely into hers. Dominic was sitting in a chair nearby, a white bandage wrapped tightly around his shoulder.

Emma looked up as I entered. She took in the blood on my coat, the cold tiredness in my eyes, and stood up quietly.

"Is it over?" she asked softly.

"It's over," I said, letting my gun slide into my holster. "Silvio is dead. The family is secure. Nobody will ever threaten this house again."

Emma closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering sigh of relief.

I walked over to the bed, looking down at my sleeping son. Then I reached out, taking Emma’s hand in mine.

"Thank you," I whispered. "For keeping him safe."

Emma looked up at me, her eyes glistening. "We keep each other safe, Vincent. That's what we do."
