Chapter 4 - The Unspoken Bond

Matteo stared at the photograph resting on his blotter. The light from his desk lamp illuminated his dead wife’s face, holding their young son on the deck of their sailboat.

Slowly, he picked up the photo and turned it over. His eyes scanned the frantic handwriting on the back.

“Look for V.D.”

The room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. The air seemed to drop ten degrees as Matteo’s breathing slowed down to a dangerous, rhythmic hum.

"Where did you find this?" he asked, his voice low and deadly quiet.

"In the basement storage vault," Juliet explained, stepping closer to the desk. "Inside an old copy of The Velveteen Rabbit. Someone locked me inside the room right after I found it. I had to crawl through the ventilation shaft to get out."

Matteo raised his head, his dark eyes locking onto hers. The grief and shock in his expression were instantly replaced by a wave of raw, terrifying rage.

He didn't doubt her. He saw the dust on her dress, the cuts on her hands, and the unmistakable authenticity of his wife’s handwriting.

"Victor," Matteo growled, the word ripping from his chest like a wounded animal.

"He's been embezzling from your West Wing accounts," Juliet said softly. "And I think... I think he's the one who’s been scaring Nico. He's been feeding Nico's fear, making him terrified of everyone so no one would get close enough to find out what Elena knew."

Matteo slammed his fist down on the mahogany desk with a force that rattled the brass lamps.

"Twenty years!" Matteo roared, his veins bulging against his neck. "I trusted that man with my father’s legacy! I trusted him with my family!"

Juliet didn't shrink away from his fury. Instead, she stepped forward and placed her soft hand gently over his clenched fist.

The touch was instantaneous—a spark of warmth cutting through his blinding rage. Matteo stopped breathing, looking down at her small, capable hand resting against his scarred knuckles.

"Mr. Caruso," Juliet whispered, her voice a soothing anchor. "If you react now, he will know we onto him. He has men inside your security detail. If he realizes you know the truth, he might burn everything down—or worse, target Nico."

Matteo looked up into her green eyes. The instinct to go on a bloody rampage was warring with the quiet wisdom of her words.

"You're right," he muttered, taking a deep breath to steady his racing pulse. He turned his hand over, his long fingers gently wrapping around hers, squeezing tightly. "You're right. We need proof. Legal proof that will strip him of his authority before I execute him."

Juliet felt a shiver run through her at the word execute, a stark reminder of the dangerous world Matteo ruled. But feeling his warm, strong hand holding hers, she didn't feel afraid. She felt protected.

"I can help you," Juliet offered. "I know basic bookkeeping. My former employer was an estate judge—I spent three years filing financial audits for his cases."

Matteo looked at her with a mixture of awe and growing admiration. "You are full of surprises, Juliet Hayes."

"A girl from Detroit has to be resourceful, Mr. Caruso."

Matteo stood up, pulling her slightly closer. "Call me Matteo."

Juliet swallowed hard, her heart doing a nervous flip in her chest. "Matteo."

Before another word could be spoken, the door to the study squeaked open.

Standing in the doorway, wearing his blue flannel pajamas and holding a stuffed bear, was Nico. He looked pale, his eyes wide with fear as he looked between his father and Juliet.

"Daddy?" Nico whimpered softly. "I heard shouting."

Matteo’s hardened composure melted instantly. He dropped to one knee, holding his arms out. "Come here, buddy."

Nico didn't run to his father. Instead, he walked past Matteo and threw his small arms around Juliet’s waist, burying his face in her apron.

"Juliet... I had a bad dream," Nico sobbed. "I dreamt Uncle Victor took Mommy away."

Matteo froze on his knees, staring at his son in profound shock. The innocent words of the boy confirmed every terrifying suspicion we had.

Juliet dropped to her knees, wrapping her arms securely around Nico’s trembling frame, kissing the top of his head. "It was just a dream, sweetheart. You're safe. Your dad and I are right here."

Matteo looked at the woman holding his son, a profound realization striking his heart like a lightning bolt.

Eleven women had walked out of his home because they saw a monster in his child. But Juliet had seen a hurting boy—and in doing so, she had saved both of them from the viper living under their roof.

"Juliet," Matteo said softly, standing up and looking down at them both with a fierce, protective warmth. "From tonight on, you aren't a maid in this house. You are family."
