Chapter 7 - The Voice from the Past

Anthony’s statement was not enough. Police needed corroboration, and they got it: payment records from a shell company linked to Vincent’s longtime accountant, burner-phone location data, a farmhouse rental paid through a corporate vendor, security logs altered using Vincent’s executive credentials, and emails showing Dr. Rusk, the dentist, received $180,000 through an offshore consulting arrangement after supplying modified dental records.

The money trail did not prove every action alone, but together, it became difficult to dismiss.

Then investigators found Isabella’s missing laptop in a storage unit rented under a false name connected to Anthony. Inside were the original vendor files, messages, photographs, and a voice memo Isabella recorded hours before she disappeared.

Her voice filled the evidence room, calm, focused, alive:

If anything happens to me, do not assume Lorenzo knows. Vincent has been altering port invoices and using executive approvals through legacy systems. Claire Donnelly gave me copies. I’m meeting her tonight. I have not told Lorenzo because Vincent is like a brother to him, and I want proof before I accuse anyone.

Lorenzo listened once. Then again. Then put his head in his hands.

Isabella had known exactly what accusing Vincent would do to him, so she waited. That decision nearly killed her, but it also left a trail.

The search for Isabella intensified. Anthony claimed she escaped the farmhouse after approximately three weeks. How? He did not know. One guard disappeared, later found alive in Pennsylvania, and admitted Isabella had broken a bathroom window during a transfer attempt, escaped into woods with Bruno, and survived by moving through shelters, abandoned buildings, and cash-only locations.

Why did she not call Lorenzo? Because Anthony said they had told her something: “If you contact him, Sophia Walker and her child die first.”

Lorenzo went completely stiff when he learned that. Sophia? Emma? Why them?

Because Sophia had once helped Isabella quietly collect household invoices for comparison—nothing criminal, nothing dangerous, but Vincent apparently believed Sophia might know enough to become leverage. Isabella stayed hidden to protect them. She did not know whether Lorenzo’s security network was compromised. She did not know whom to trust, not even inside the estate. That explained the warehouse, the hunger, the short hair, the fear, and why she ran when Sophia and Emma saw her.
