Chapter 9 - The Reckoning at the Estate

Vincent Moreau sat in the executive dining room of the DeLuca estate, reviewing shipping ledgers with a calm, unbothered expression. He wore his usual bespoke charcoal suit, his silver-rimmed glasses catching the midday light through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Outside, the manicured lawns stretched out toward the tree line, peaceful and pristine.

The heavy oak doors of the dining room did not open slowly; they blew inward with a crash that splintered the frame.

Vincent looked up, frowning. “What the hell—?”

Four armed men rushed into the room, securing the corners before Vincent could stand. Behind them walked Lorenzo. He was not wearing his jacket. His shirtsleeves were rolled to his elbows, and his face was carved from dark, absolute stone.

Beside him walked Isabella.

She looked pale, her hair still short and cropped, wrapped in a heavy sweater, but she walked with her chin high. At her side, Bruno let out a low, vibrating growl that shook the crystal glasses on the sideboard.

Vincent’s color drained instantly. The pen slipped from his fingers, clattering against the polished walnut table.

“Isabella,” he breathed, the name catching in his throat like broken glass.

“Hello, Vincent,” she said, her voice steady and clear.

Vincent tried to recover, pasting a thin, trembling smile on his face. “Thank God. We thought... the crash... everyone thought you were gone. Lorenzo, my friend, how is this possible?”

Lorenzo did not yell. He did not smash a glass or throw a punch. He walked slowly around the table until he stood directly across from his oldest friend of twenty-two years.

“You killed Claire Donnelly,” Lorenzo said quietly.

Vincent swallowed hard. “What? Claire? The coordinator? What does she have to do with—?”

“You diverted nine point four million dollars through North Pier shell companies,” Isabella cut in, stepping closer. “Claire found the discrepancy in the subcontractor billing. She brought it to me because she didn't know who else to trust within the logistics network. We were going to look at the books together. But you were already watching her.”

“This is insane,” Vincent stammered, standing up. “Some conspiracy—some forged documents—Isabella, you’ve been through a trauma, you don't know what you're saying—mingling files—!”

“You had Anthony Bell intercept us,” Isabella continued, her green eyes piercing straight through him. “You drugged me, put Claire in my car, and sent it over the ravine to burn beyond recognition so no one would look for me while you looted the remaining accounts and seized complete operational control of the eastern shipping corridors.”

Vincent looked at Lorenzo, his eyes wide with desperate pleading. “Lorenzo, look at me. Look at us! Twenty-two years! You’re going to listen to a ghost and a bunch of forged ledger pages over your own brother?”

Lorenzo reached inside his coat. He did not pull a gun. He pulled out a small, metallic object and dropped it onto the table in front of Vincent.

It was the broken, bent-ring dog collar.

“Bruno found it in the warehouse where you kept me,” Isabella said softly. “And Anthony Bell told the federal prosecutor about the Kingston farmhouse. The warrant for your arrest was signed thirty minutes ago, Vincent. Federal agents are already securing your accounts, your properties, and your brother-in-law’s shell companies.”

Vincent stared at the collar. Then he looked at Bruno.

The massive Cane Corso bared his yellowed, bone-crushing teeth, taking a slow step forward. The growl grew louder, filling the high-ceilinged room like an approaching storm.

Vincent backed away until his thighs hit the back of his chair. He looked at Lorenzo one last time, seeing the cold, terrifying void where friendship used to live.

“You’re making a mistake,” Vincent whispered.

“The only mistake I made,” Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a lethal register, “was trusting you.”

He nodded to Mason, who stepped forward with zip-ties and federal-style marshals waiting at the open doors.

As Vincent was dragged out of the room, kicking and shouting about rights and lawyers, the heavy doors closed behind him. The DeLuca estate was quiet again.

Lorenzo turned to Isabella. The long nightmare was over. The traitor was caged. The truth was out.
