Chapter 3 - The Private Wing

The basement surgical suite beneath the Castellano mansion was built like a military bunker. Reinforced steel doors, independent air filtration, and surgical equipment that rivaled any top-tier trauma hospital in the country. It was built for one purpose: keeping the head of the Castellano family alive without ever having to call a public ambulance.
For three agonizing hours, Dr. Harrison and his surgical team worked under the harsh white lights, repairing Adrian’s torn artery and extracting shrapnel from his torso.
Outside the glass observation wall, Clara sat on a stainless steel bench, nursing a cup of lukewarm black coffee. Beside her, Titan lay flat on the floor, his chin resting across her canvas sneakers. The dog had refused to leave her side, growling at any guard who tried to pull him away, until Marco finally gave up and ordered everyone to leave the nurse alone.
The heavy door to the observation corridor clicked open.
Julian Castellano walked in, holding two fresh bottles of water. He had shed his dark coat, revealing a tailored linen shirt, though his hair remained impeccably styled despite the hour. He offered a polite, practiced smile as he approached Clara.
"You performed a miracle up there, Nurse Vance," Julian said, his voice a smooth, rich baritone. He gestured toward the massive mastiff on the floor. "Titan has ripped the sleeve off two of our best security operatives over the years. My brother bought him from a military breeder in Calabria. He's trained to recognize only three people."
"He didn't need training tonight," Clara said coolly, taking a sip of her coffee without reaching for the water bottle he offered. "He just needed someone who wasn't trying to control him."
Julian’s smile faltered for a microsecond before returning, smooth and polished. "Regardless, the Castellano family owes you a debt. My brother’s estate will see to it that you are compensated beyond your wild instincts."
"I don't want your money, Mr. Castellano," Clara replied, looking him straight in the eye. "I was on shift for the regional transport team. I brought the blood plasma units. I'm just doing my job."
Julian leaned slightly against the wall, his gaze dropping casually toward Clara’s right pocket, where she had slipped the silver key after Adrian went unconscious.
"My brother... before he lost consciousness," Julian began softly, his tone dripping with subtle, probing interest. "Did he say anything to you? He was disoriented, of course, but sometimes victims of violent shock repeat names or instructions."
Titan let out a low rumble from the floor. Clara felt the dog’s body tense against her feet.
"He was choking on his own blood, Mr. Castellano," Clara lied seamlessly, keeping her face completely calm. "He wasn't speaking. He was struggling to breathe."
Julian stared at her for a long, silent moment. The silence dragged out until it felt like a physical weight in the corridor.
"I see," Julian finally said, stepping back. "Well, if he recovers, I’m sure he will express his gratitude himself."
If he recovers. Not when. The choice of words wasn't lost on Clara.
Dr. Harrison stepped out of the surgical room, stripping off his blood-stained gloves, looking exhausted but relieved. "He’s stable. The internal bleeding is controlled. We’re moving him to the intensive recovery suite down the hall."
"Can I see him?" Julian asked immediately.
"Not yet," Dr. Harrison said, shaking his head. "His vitals are still fragile, and we're keeping him under heavy sedation for the next twelve hours. Only essential medical staff."
Harrison turned his attention to Clara. "Nurse Vance, I've requested your transport agency to extend your assignment here for the next forty-eight hours. You're the only person this dog tolerates, and frankly, keeping Titan calm is keeping Adrian's heart rate stable. Will you stay?"
Clara looked down at the massive black mastiff looking up at her with trusting, dark eyes. Then she looked at Julian, who stood in the shadows of the hallway, watching her like a hawk assessing prey.
She knew walking away was the smart choice. This wasn't her world. This was a world of shadow empires, secret codes, and brothers who looked at dying men like financial opportunities. But she also remembered the desperate, crushing grip of Adrian Castellano’s hand, and the terrified beast that had surrendered to her bare palms.

"I'll stay," Clara said softly.
Julian’s jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. "Wonderful," he said, his voice entirely devoid of warmth. "We’ll make sure you have everything you need, Nurse Vance."
