Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

What followed in the west corridor was swift, brutal, and decisive.
Disoriented by tear gas and choked by suppression foam, Julian’s hired mercenaries had no tactical advantage in the narrow space. Marco’s twelve loyal guards, wearing thermal goggles and gas masks, moved through the fog with ruthless efficiency, disarming and securing the mercenaries one by one.
Titan was a force of nature. He didn't kill; he hunted with terrifying precision, knocking men off their feet, disarming shooters before they could acquire a target, his barks sounding like thunderclaps in the enclosed hallway.
Within eight minutes, the gunfire stopped.
The smoke extractors in the ceiling kicked in, clearing the air, revealing twelve mercenaries zip-tied on the floor, disarmed and defeated.
At the far end of the hallway, backed up against the sealed blast doors of the security hub, stood Julian Castellano.
His tailored shirt was ruined, stained with foam and soot, his hair wild, his hands shaking violently as he held a small silver pistol aimed down the corridor.
"Stay back!" Julian screamed, his eyes wild with terror. "Stay away from me!"
Marco stepped forward, his tactical shotgun leveled at Julian’s chest. "Drop it, Julian. It's over."
"It's not over!" Julian wept, his sanity crumbling under the weight of total failure. "He took everything from me! He always took everything! The family, the business, the land!"
"You gave it away, Julian," a voice called out.
The crowd of guards parted.
Adrian Castellano walked slowly down the hallway. He was draped in a heavy black coat, supported on one side by Clara Vance, his face pale, his stitches burning with every step, but his posture absolute, towering, and unbroken.
Beside them walked Titan, his black coat covered in foam, his head held high, walking step-for-step with the nurse who had saved his master.
Julian stared at his brother as if looking at a ghost returned from the grave. The silver pistol in his hand shook so violently it rattled against his knuckles.
"Adrian..." Julian whimpered, taking a step back until his head hit the steel door. "Please... we're blood..."
"Blood doesn't break a gate code at midnight, Julian," Adrian said, his voice cold as arctic ice, stopping ten feet away. "Blood doesn't leave a brother to burn in a hallway."
Julian looked at the barrel of Marco's shotgun, then at the massive mastiff staring at him with dark, unforgiving eyes, and finally at Clara, who held Adrian steady with unyielding strength.
Julian’s hand gave out. The silver pistol dropped, clattering uselessly against the stone floor. He collapsed to his knees, burying his face in his hands, sobbing hysterically as Marco’s men stepped forward and slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
"Take him to the basement holding cell," Adrian commanded quietly, not looking down at his brother. "The federal prosecutors will be here at eight."
Marco nodded, dragging Julian away into the shadows of the estate.
The silence that returned to the mansion was clean. The smoke was clearing, the fire was out, and the treason that had rotted the foundation of the Castellano house had been completely purged.
Adrian turned to look at Clara.
He slid his arm off her shoulder, standing on his own feet for the first time, though his dark eyes remained fixed on her face with profound, unspoken gratitude.
"You're not just a nurse, Clara Vance," Adrian said softly, his voice thick with emotion.

Clara offered a faint, tired smile, wiping a smudged streak of soot from her cheek. "I'm just someone who knows how to listen when an animal is trying to save a life."
Titan walked up between them, placing his massive head directly against Clara’s hip, letting out a long, happy huff of total peace.
