Chapter 4 - The Confrontation

"You have five minutes to explain what that little scene in the kitchen was about," Linda demanded, her voice echoing in the marble corridor. I could hear the rustle of her expensive silk robe. "You humiliated us in front of your wife! You carried her around like she’s royalty while ignoring your own sisters!"
"This is not your home, Mom," Ethan said, his voice dropping so low it sounded like grinding stones. "It is my home. Purchased with my money. Maintained by my labor."
"We are your family!" Olivia shouted. "We have a right to be here! Dad promised us—"
"Dad promised you security, Olivia! He didn't grant you a lifetime pass to turn my wife into an unpaid maid!" Ethan roared, his voice bouncing off the high ceilings. "I have paid your credit card bills for five years. I paid off Madison's luxury sedan. I paid for Chloe's private college tuition, which she is currently failing because she spends four days a week at spa resorts!"
"Ethan!" Linda gasped, scandalized. "How dare you throw money in our faces! After everything I sacrificed to raise you—"
"You sacrificed nothing!" Ethan cut her off, his tone razor-sharp. " Dad left you a three-million-dollar life insurance policy, Mom! Where did that money go? You gave it to a fraudulent investment manager three years ago, and instead of taking responsibility, you let me pay for your entire life so your friends at the country club wouldn't realize you were broke!"
The hallway went completely, suffocatingly quiet.
I sat up on the bed, my breath catching in my throat. I hadn't known about the insurance money. Ethan had never mentioned it. He had taken on the entire burden of their lifestyle believing his mother was penniless.
"You... you knew?" Linda’s voice lost its sharp edge, suddenly sounding thin, fragile, and caught.
"I found out six months ago when I was reviewing his estate tax returns," Ethan revealed, his voice laced with cold disgust. "I didn't say anything because I loved you. I thought, she's embarrassed, she's grieving, let me carry the weight. But while I was carrying your weight, you were stepping on my wife's head."
"Ethan, darling..." Linda's tone pivoted instantly, shifting into the soft, tearful manipulation she used whenever she was cornered. "We didn't mean to hurt Emily. We just... we thought she wanted to help around the house. She never said anything to us! If she was feeling overwhelmed, she should have spoken up!"
"She tried to speak up, Mom. And every time she did, you gaslit her, mocked her, and made her feel like she was insane," Ethan spat. "I saw her face tonight. I saw her feet. I saw the tears dropping into cold grease while my sisters sat on forty-thousand-dollar furniture eating sixty-dollar sushi."
"So what are you saying?" Madison asked, her voice laced with panic now. "You're kicking us out?"
"I am saying," Ethan said, every word spoken with terrifying precision, "that by eight o'clock tomorrow morning, every single one of your belongings will be packed. The moving trucks will be here at nine. You will move into the condo I bought as an investment property downtown. It is two bedrooms. You will share."
"Two bedrooms?!" Olivia shrieked. "There are four of us! Where are we supposed to put our clothes?"
"Figure it out," Ethan said coldly. "The credit cards associated with my corporate account have already been canceled as of five minutes ago. The allowance stops tonight. If you want expensive clothes, get a job. If you want takeout, pay for it yourselves."
"Ethan James, you cannot do this to your mother!" Linda screamed, her composure shattering completely into ugly rage. "I will tell everyone in the family! I will tell your father's friends what a cold, heartless monster you've become!"
"Tell them," Ethan whispered, leaning close to her face. "Tell them I stopped funding four parasitic adults so I could take care of my dying father's real legacy: my wife and my son. Now get out of my sight before I have security escort you to a hotel tonight."
The heavy footsteps of his sisters scattered down the hallway in frantic panic. Linda let out a strangled sob of pure rage before her heels clicked furiously toward her master suite.
The door opened, and Ethan walked back into our room.

He didn't look victorious. He looked broken, his hands trembling as he locked the door behind him. He walked over to the bed, collapsed onto his knees, and buried his face in my lap.
I wrapped my arms around his shoulders, holding him tight as the powerful, unshakeable man wept silently against my belly.
