Chapter 8 - The Boundary

"You don't get to step into this room, Mom," Ethan said, his voice entirely steady, completely devoid of the hesitation he had carried for years. "You don't get to act like a loving grandmother after what you did to the woman who carried him."

"Ethan, please!" Olivia cried, stepping forward with her hands clasped. "We're sorry! Okay? We've had a horrible month! The condo is tiny, we're stressed, Madison had to get a job at a clothing boutique, and we just want our family back!"

I looked at Olivia from the hospital bed, holding Leo close to my chest now. Their 'apology' wasn't about remorse; it was about comfort. They were suffering under the reality of paying their own bills, and they thought a newborn baby was their golden ticket back into Ethan's wallet and estate.

"You're not sorry about how you treated Emily," Ethan said, looking his sister dead in the eye. "You're sorry that the credit cards stopped working. You're sorry that the gravy train reached the end of the line."

"That is a cruel lie!" Linda shrieked, her mask slipping completely once again. "I carried you for nine months! I raised you! How dare you ban me from seeing my own blood over that selfish, manipulative—"

"Get out," Ethan interrupted, stepping directly into Linda's personal space.

He towered over his mother, his dark eyes burning with an absolute, terrifying authority that made Linda recoil.

"If you ever speak about my wife like that again, if you ever step within fifty feet of my home, my family, or my son," Ethan whispered, every word sharp enough to draw blood, "I will file a formal restraining order and ensure that not a single cent from any family trust ever touches your hands again."

Linda stared at him. For the first time in thirty-two years, she realized that her grip on her son was officially, permanently destroyed. The manipulation that had worked for decades was entirely powerless against the love he had for his wife and child.

"You're a disgrace," Linda spat, her voice trembling with bitter, toxic defeat. "You threw your family away for a peasant."

"No, Mom," Ethan said calmly, reaching behind him to open the heavy hospital door. "I left the parasites behind so I could finally build a real family. Now leave."

Olivia burst into fresh tears and turned down the hallway. Madison grabbed her mother's arm, pulling her back. Linda glared at Ethan one final time, her chin trembling with fury, before turning on her heel and marching down the corridor, her heels clicking angrily against the linoleum.

Ethan closed the door. He locked it.

He leaned his back against the wood, letting out a long, shuddering sigh. The rage left his body, replaced by a deep, beautiful calm.

He walked over to the bed, sat beside me, and wrapped his arms around both of us, resting his chin on my shoulder as we looked down at our sleeping son.

"They're never going to hurt us again, Em," Ethan promised softly. "I promise you."

"I know," I whispered, kissing his cheek. "I know."
