Chapter 13 - The Trap Closes

We all spun around.

Leaning against the heavy iron doorframe, looking entirely too relaxed for a man whose empire had just imploded on live television, stood Arthur Sterling. He wasn't handcuffed. The security guards who had supposedly dragged him away were standing quietly behind him, their uniforms immaculate, their expressions blank.

Seth moved instantly, stepping directly in front of me, his body a solid barrier between us and Arthur. "You're trespassing in a sealed probate archive, Sterling. And after what you pulled on air, you're looking at federal wire fraud charges."

Arthur let out a low, smooth chuckle, adjusting the cuffs of his bespoke silk shirt. "Wire fraud, Mr. Brooks? I’m simply a concerned citizen assisting the rightful heir in claiming her birthright. Isn't that right, Mallerie?"

He looked past Seth, locking those cold, reptilian eyes onto mine.

"You orchestrated this whole thing," I said, my voice shaking with a dangerous mixture of fear and pure, unadulterated fury. "The group chat leaks, the gala sabotage, the livestream... you didn't care about Evelyn taking the fall. You wanted Eleanor’s trust to shatter so you could pick up the pieces."

"Oh, my dear girl, you give me too much credit," Arthur smiled, stepping into the vault and letting the heavy door click shut behind him. "Evelyn was a liability; she had to be pruned. But Eleanor? Eleanor has been sitting on a goldmine built on a stolen foundation for decades. And the brilliant part of American copyright law is that stolen property cannot legally generate clean dividends."

Arthur walked slowly toward the leather trunk, looking down at Clara’s journals with an expression of predatory satisfaction.

"When Eleanor signed over the residual rights to Clara’s direct bloodline forty-eight hours ago," Arthur continued, his voice dropping into a mocking, conspiratorial tone, "she didn't just hand you a fortune, Mallerie. She handed you the liability. Every dollar *The Meadow of Whispers* earned over the last ten years—every movie adaptation royalty, every academic grant, every foreign translation fee—was funneled through a trust that technically belongs to a dead woman's estate. And since you are now the sole legal heir of that estate..."

Arthur paused, letting the silence stretch until it felt like a physical weight crushing our lungs. "...you are personally liable for thirty million dollars in retroactive tax evasion and copyright misappropriation."

The blood drained from my face. The room tilted violently. Thirty million dollars. A debt so staggering, so absolute, it could obliterate my entire life before I even had a chance to build one.

"You're insane," Kira spat, stepping forward with her phone raised, recording every second of his confession. "This is extortion, plain and simple. We have you on video admitting to manipulating the filings."

"Do you, Ms. Andrews?" Arthur raised an eyebrow, unfazed by the glowing screen. "Go ahead, broadcast it. But remember, the moment that video goes public, the IRS freezes the entire Vance Estate—including every cent Eleanor possesses, and every asset tied to the upcoming film adaptations. The scandal won't just ruin Mallerie; it will destroy every writer, publisher, and investor associated with this house. I go down? I take the entire industry with me."

Eleanor raised her head, her face etched with the bitter agony of a woman who had finally been outmaneuvered by her own monster. "You planned this from the very beginning, Arthur. The moment I tried to cut you out of the board."

"Business is business, my dear," Arthur replied smoothly. Then he turned his gaze back to me, his smile turning razor-sharp. "Unless, of course, there is a very simple way to resolve this little family dispute."

Seth’s hands curled into tight fists at his sides, his voice dropping into a low, menacing growl. "Name it. And make it quick before I forget I’m in polite company."

Arthur didn't even flinch at Seth’s threat. He simply reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a single sheet of heavy cream-colored paper, sliding it across the metal filing cabinet toward me.

"Sign over your power of attorney over Clara Vance’s estate to Sterling Holdings," Arthur said smoothly. "Drop all legal claims against the corporate trust, and sign a public affidavit declaring that Eleanor Vance is the sole, undisputed author of *The Meadow of Whispers*, with zero historical ties to your family."

I looked down at the paper. It was a complete surrender. A lifetime of my grandmother’s legacy, erased with a single stroke of a pen, traded away to save myself from a financial execution.

"And if I refuse?" I asked, looking him dead in the eye.

Arthur’s smile didn't reach his eyes. "Then tomorrow morning, the federal marshals arrive at your apartment with an arrest warrant for financial fraud. Choose wisely, Mallerie. The clock is ticking."
