Chapter 19 - The Counter-Strike in the Shadows

The air inside the hidden archive was thick with the smell of damp stone, ozone, and old paper. As we descended the concrete steps, the emergency fluorescent strips overhead flickered to life with a harsh, buzzing hum, casting a sterile white glow over rows of steel filing cabinets and electronic server racks that hummed quietly in the corner.
"This is it," Seth murmured, running his hand along the top of a metal cabinet. "The physical heart of his entire operation."
"Start pulling the files marked with the red corporate seal," I instructed, moving quickly toward a massive oak desk positioned in the center of the room.
On top of the desk sat a vintage typewriter, a stack of blank letterhead bearing my grandmother’s official crest, and an open ledger detailing the liquidation of the family’s European holdings. But it wasn't the documents that caught my eye; it was the red blinking light of an active terminal console connected directly to a satellite uplink.
Someone was trying to scrub the database remotely.
"Kira!" I shouted over the hum of the servers. "Look at the terminal! Someone is executing a remote wipe sequence from an outside IP address!"
Kira sprinted across the room, her eyes locking onto the scrolling lines of red text flooding the monitor. "They’re using an encrypted tunnel from a server in Zurich! If that script finishes running, it’ll wipe every backup we just downloaded!"
"Can you stop it?" Seth asked, stepping up behind her.
"Not from here, I need to route through the primary gateway," Kira muttered furiously, her fingers flying across the keyboard with lightning speed. "They’ve locked down the local firewall. I have to bypass their encryption key manually."
Seconds ticked by like agonizing hours. The red progress bar on the screen crept closer and closer to completion: *95%... 97%... 99%...*
"Come on, come on..." Kira gritted her teeth, sweat beading on her forehead as she hammered a complex sequence of override commands into the console. *“Got you!”*
With a sharp, rhythmic keystroke, she hit the enter key. The screen flashed a brilliant, blinding green. A cascading wall of green text flooded the monitor, followed by a large, bold message stamped across the display: **ACCESS TERMINATED. PROTOCOL NEUTRALIZED.**
Across the room, the server racks let out a collective whimper as their cooling fans spun down to a quiet, steady hum. The remote wipe had been successfully blocked, and the complete, unedited archives of Arthur’s thirty-year conspiracy were safely locked down under federal jurisdiction.
Just then, the heavy metal door at the top of the stairs banged open. Footsteps echoed heavily down the concrete steps as Detective Vance and his tactical team descended into the vault.
"We’ve secured the perimeter," Vance announced, his breathing slightly elevated from the rapid movement. He looked around the underground room, taking in the server racks, the files, and the terminal screens. "Looks like we found the smoking gun."

"We didn't just find it," I said, turning around to face him with a slow, vindictive smile spreading across my face. "We caught them red-handed trying to pull the trigger from across the ocean."
