Chapter 20 - The Midnight Dispatch

The sun dipped below the jagged timberline, casting long, bruised purples and deep charcoal shadows across the rolling hills of Ohio. Inside the house, Grace was fast asleep upstairs in her newly painted bedroom, her breathing deep and rhythmic, completely unaware of the looming shadow that had just settled over our world.
Downstairs in the study, the amber glow of a single desk lamp illuminated the cluttered wooden desktop. I sat in Uncle Ray’s old leather armchair, staring blankly at the navy-blue legal document Julian had left behind on the counter, alongside my laptop screen which displayed the live financial tracking logs of our corporate trust.
Twenty-four hours. That was all the time Julian had given me.
If I signed his buyout agreement, I would surrender everything we had fought for, trading our hard-won independence for a gilded cage of secret offshore stipends and permanent subjugation to the Sterling family. If I refused, he would unleash a decade of international litigation, financial freezes, and relentless legal warfare designed to crush us into dust.
There was no legal loophole left to exploit. Domestic courts couldn't touch an offshore maritime trust structured under Cayman Islands survivorship clauses managed by a ghost who had legally hidden his own death for eleven years.
Unless... unless Julian had made a fatal mistake.
My insurance claims investigator brain—honed by years of dissecting fraudulent corporate cover-ups, falsified paper trails, and hidden shell companies—began tearing through the international maritime registry logs I had downloaded from David Vance’s secure server.
I didn't need to beat Julian in a courtroom. I didn't need to outspend his offshore accounts. I just needed to find the single thread in his elaborate, decade-long illusion that, when pulled, would unravel the entire fraudulent structure of his resurrection.
My fingers flew across the keyboard, cross-referencing maritime accident reports from Maine in 2012 with Swiss banking secrecy filings from 2018, and private jet charter manifests originating out of Zurich.
Hour after hour ticked by in absolute silence. The digital clock on the bottom corner of my screen slowly flipped from 11:59 PM to 12:00 AM.
The twenty-four-hour deadline had officially begun.
Suddenly, a hidden data point caught my eye—a single line item buried deep within a subsidiary corporate asset transfer filed in Zurich just six months after Julian’s supposed plane crash. It wasn't Julian’s name on the transfer authorization.
It was my mother’s maiden name, combined with a digital signature stamp belonging to Arthur Sterling’s personal offshore proxy.
My breath hitched in my throat. My hands trembled slightly as I clicked to open the encrypted PDF attachment containing the foundational incorporation documents of the secondary Cayman Islands trust.
The documents weren't signed by Julian Sterling in 2012.
They were signed by Julian Sterling *last week*, using a forged biometric proxy designed to retroactively fabricate survivorship rights that never legally existed in the first place.
Julian hadn't been hiding in the shadows for eleven years. He had only just arrived back in the country three weeks ago, following Arthur’s arrest, desperately scrambling to rescue the family’s collapsing financial empire before federal regulators seized everything.
He was bluffing. The international maritime trust was a complete, fabricated house of cards built on forged retroactive signatures and fraudulent banking timestamps.

A slow, fierce smile spread across my face. I grabbed my mobile phone, dialed David Vance’s direct line at 12:15 in the morning, and waited for him to pick up.
“David,” I said, my voice ringing with absolute, razor-sharp clarity as the midnight silence wrapped around the house. “Wake up. I found the smoking gun. And tomorrow at noon, Julian Sterling is going to walk right into a federal perjury trap from which he will never escape.”
